Dawn Simmons Earns Win 300 as Softball Sweeps Roanoke 3-2, 6-2

Coach Dawn SimmonsLYNCHBURG, VA - Lynchburg College head softball coach Dawn Simmons earned her 300th win today in game one of an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) double-header sweep of Roanoke College Saturday afternoon, winning game one 3-2 and game two 6-2. The Hornets have now won 14 straight games.

Tara Campbell (Leesburg, VA/Loudoun Co.) sent a pitch deep over the left field fence in the bottom of the first to drive in Audra Della Rosa (Rumford, RI/St. Mary Academy Bay View) and give the Hornets a 2-0 lead. However, the Maroons (17-7/7-5 ODAC) struck back in the third inning. Barbie Miles (Kinsale, VA/Washington & Lee) walked Felice Lowery to load the bases and Kelsey Ruitenberg drew another walk to give Roanoke their first run. Clarissa Norwich grounded out to first base, but Jessica Zeman was able to cross home plate to tie the game at 2-2. LC scored the game-winning run in the fourth inning as Ashley Hohenberger (Wake Forest, NC/Longwood) singled and Katie Bruce (Lafayette, VA/Lanexa) was able to reach home plate on a throw.

Della Rosa went 3-for-3 at the plate and scored one run while Campbell went 1-for-3 with two RBI and a run. Miles threw all seven innings, allowing just two hits, one earned run, and tossing seven strikeouts.

Homeruns was the name of the game in the second game as Amber James (Manahawkin, NJ/S. Regional) provided Lynchburg with a 2-0 lead after two innings after she hit a two-run bomb down the right field line to drive home Campbell. Roanoke came within a run in the third inning after Ruitenberg doubled to plate Lowery, but a Lauren Dugay (Williamsburg, VA/Jamestown) three-run homer in the bottom of the fourth put the game out of reach for Roanoke.

James finished the game 1-for-3 with a run and two RBI and Duguay was 2-for-3 with one score and three runs batted in. Bruce tossed a complete game, scattering nine hits, one walk, and two strikeouts.

Lynchburg (19-4/10-0 ODAC) look to continue their winning ways as they travel to Guilford College tomorrow for an ODAC double-header at 2 p.m.
