Taylor Collects Five Hits In LC Baseball 10-6 Win Over Hampden-Sydney
HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA - Junior Jeff Taylor (Lynchburg, VA/Heritage) posted five hits in as many at-bats Thursday as the Lynchburg College baseball team defeated Hampden-Sydney College 10-6 in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play from Yank Bernier Field.
The Hornets (18-9/8-1 ODAC) opened the scoring in the top of the first, as sophomore Chris Colquhoun posted a RBI single to put LC up 1-0. H-SC responded with a pair of runs off LC starter Jon Nichols (Stafford, VA/North Stafford) in the bottom half of the first to make the score 2-1.
After LC scored single runs in the second and third, the Tigers added two unearned runs to make the tally 4-3 after five innings. The Hornet bats from that point ignited, as LC scored once in the sixth inning, twice in the seventh and four times in the eighth to pull away from the host Tigers.
In that four-run eighth for Lynchburg, senior Kyle Bradley (Brookneal, VA/William Campbell) posted a two-out, RBI double to right field, while Taylor also had a run scoring single during the frame. The big blow for LC came from Jordan Watkins (Freeland, MD/Heresford), a transfer from H-SC, who doubled in a pair of runs to chase Hampden-Sydney starter John West.
On a cold and rainy day, the play was sloppy as the two teams combined for eight errors and six unearned runs. Nichols went eight and two-thirds innings for LC, surrendering two earned runs in gaining his fourth win of the season.
Every Hornet starter had at least one hit on the afternoon, as the team pounded out 17 for the ball game. Cameron Grant (Lynchburg, VA/Heritage) was three-for-five with two runs, while Watkins finished two-for-five with two RBI and two runs scored. Junior right fielder David Gaines, Jr. (Lynchburg, VA/Jefferson Forest) had two hits and two runs, and Colquhoun had three RBI, posting two sacrifice flies.
Matt Brown and Evan Rogers each had three hits for the Tigers, while West went seven and two-thirds allowing eight earned runs and 15 hits.
Lynchburg returns to Fox Field Friday afternoon for a non-conference battle with Shenandoah University at 3 p.m.
