General Women's Lacrosse Escapes with 11-10 Win over LC
LYNCHBURG, VA - Wilton Megargel scored the game winner with under five minutes to play as the Washington & Lee University women's lacrosse team held on for an 11-10 win over Lynchburg College Tuesday in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) action.
The Generals netted three quick goals out of the gate - two by Meredith Freeman, but LC answered back with three to tie the score with just five minutes expired in the contest. Washington & Lee scored three more after the Lynchburg surge, and LC closed out the half with two goals to close the W&L lead to 6-5. The Generals took a 10-8 lead late in the contest before back-to-back goals by Deana Welsch (Yorktown Heights, NY/Yorktown) and Patti Sheahan (Lutherville, MD/St. Timothy's) tied the score at 10 with 6:20 on the game clock. Megargel scored from Emmy Mathews at 4:53 and the Hornets had several chances at the goal, but W&L's Colleen Evans caused a late turnover and the Generals were able to run out most of the rest of the clock to seal the victory. The Hornets got the ball back in their own end with nine seconds left, but were unable to get a shot off before the final buzzer.
Sophomore midfielder Morgan Logue (Barrington, IL/Barrington) scored four times for LC and added an assist. Sheahan and Welsch each scored two goals, and Lindsay Gengras (Avon, CT/Avon) tallied a goal and an assist. Katie Ollice (West Chester, PA/West Chester) also found the back of the net, and keeper Christina Tran (Sterling, VA/Severn) kept LC in the game with 13 saves.
Freeman paced W&L (7-4/4-1 ODAC) with four scores and Britten Mathews had two goals and an assist. Katie Flippen added a goal and an assist. W&L out-shot Lynchburg 31-23 and held a 15-8 edge in draw controls.
