Lynchburg Baseball Stays Undefeated in ODAC with Twinbill Sweep of Eastern Mennonite Sunday

LYNCHBURG, VA - The Lynchburg College baseball team upped its conference record to 6-0 with a doubleheader sweep of Eastern Mennonite University Sunday in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play from City Stadium.
In game one, the Hornets outlasted the Royals to earn a 5-3 win. EMU struck first in the top of the third, scoring a single run on a RBI double from Chris Harpine. Lynchburg answered with single runs in the bottom of the third and fourth, before scoring a pair of tallies in the fifth frame to take the lead for good.
Conner Thompson (Solomons, MD/Reservoirs) improved to 6-0 on the campaign, allowing three runs and eight hits over five innings. Justin Ferrell (Red Oak, VA/Randolph-Henry) worked a scoreless sixth before handing the ball to Robbie Garrett (Richmond, VA/Mills Godwin), who earned his second save on the season. Kyle Bradley (Brookneal, VA/William Campbell) led LC in the opener with two hits and two runs.
In the nightcap, the Royals again jumped out to an early lead, but could not hold off the Hornets as LC won 10-4. EMU scored two in the top of the first to take a 2-0 lead, but a lone run in the first and three scores in the second by Lynchburg put the score at 4-2 LC.
After Eastern Mennonite tied the game in the fifth at four, the Hornets responded with six runs over the next two innings to put the game away. Jon Nichols (Stafford, VA/North Stafford) got the victory, surrendering four earned runs and nine hits, fanning five Royal batters.
Cameron Grant (Lynchburg, VA/Heritage) was two-for-five in the nightcap, hitting a opposite field homer to lead off the game. Jeff Taylor (Lynchburg, VA/Heritage) was two-for-three, while junior catcher Ryan Litz (Forest, VA/Jefferson Forest) finished two-for-four with a run and RBI.
Keith Yancey (Keysville, VA/Randolph-Henry), Ryan McDonough (Centereach, NY/Our Savior) and Rich Glover (Bedford, VA/Liberty) combined to throw four scoreless innings of relief, while second basemen Jordan Watkins (Freeland, MD/Heresford) extended his hit streak to 11 games.
Harpine was a combined five-for-eight in the doubleheader for EMU, Jake Norman also had a pair of multi-hit performances.
Lynchburg returns to the diamond tomorrow afternoon, traveling to Washington & Lee University for a league doubleheader with the Generals at 3 p.m.
