Seven Run Eighth Inning by NC Wesleyan Dooms LC Baseball Friday
LYNCHBURG, VA - The North Carolina Wesleyan College Battling Bishops scored seven runs in the top of the eighth, taking the lead for good as the Hornets of Lynchburg College fell 7-4 Friday afternoon in non-conference baseball play from Fox Field in miserable, rainy conditions.
Lynchburg (14-8) led 3-0 going into the frame, but seven unearned, two out runs by the Battling Bishops proved to be too much to LC. Daniel Moore had a two-run single for NCWC(15-11) in the inning, while Kyle Williford also doubled in a pair of runs.
Lynchburg posted single runs in the second, third and sixth innings to give itself a 3-0 lead going into the eighth stanza. In the second, Ryan Litz (Forest, VA/Jefferson Forest) singled in a run, and later on LC got runs thanks to a wild pitch and a NC Wesleyan fielding error.
Lynchburg starter Michael Straub (Falls Church, VA/George Mason) went five innings, scattering seven hits while fanning seven Bishop hitters. Sophomore infielder Jordan Watkins (Freeland, MD/Hereford) extended his hitting streak to nine with a four-for-four, two run afternoon.
Juniors Jeff Taylor (Lynchburg, VA/Heritage) and Cameron Grant (Lynchburg, VA/Heritage) each had two hits for the Hornets, who left 12 runners on base for the afternoon. NC Wesleyan was paced by Justin Batts, who finished three-for five with a RBI on the day. Justin Tuck was two-for-four, while Moore finished with two hits and two knocked in.
Jon Shearon got the win for the Bishops, as he went seven innings allowing two earned runs and nine hits.
Saturday's conference doubleheader with Eastern Mennonite University has already been postponed until Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. on Fox Field.
