Hornet Baseball Falls 2-1 to Methodist University in Pitcher's Duel
LYNCHBURG, VA - The Lynchburg Hornets baseball team stranded eight hitters on base Tuesday afternoon as LC dropped a non-conference battle with Methodist University 2-1 from Fox Field.
Lynchburg starter Bryan Breedlove (Suffolk, VA/Nansemond-Suffolk) was brilliant all game, allowing only four hits and one earned run in eight and a third innings. Two of the four hits he allowed came in the ninth inning, as the Monarchs (17-7) plated an insurance run on an RBI single from Brian Halpin.
Lynchburg (14-7) cut the lead in half in the bottom of the ninth, as Jeff Taylor (Lynchburg, VA/Heritage) started the inning off with a single to left. Taylor moved to third base as the MU left fielder misplayed the ball, and pinch hitter Daniel Haugh (Earlysville, VA/Albemarle) drove in Taylor with a groundout to bring LC to within one.
With two outs, junior Sean Campbell (White Plaines, NY/White Plains) drew a walk, but was stranded on first as MU reliever Landon Jordan ended the game with a strikeout. Jordan earned the save for the Monarchs after going the final three innings, surrendering only one unearned run and two hits.
Methodist scored its first run of the game in the third inning, as Peter Yusckat was hit by a pitch to start the frame. The subsequent sacrifice bunt was thrown up the line, and Yusckat came all away around to score. That proved to be enough for Monarch starter Tre' Britt, who tossed six innings of scoreless, seven-hit baseball.
Taylor finished with three hits for the Hornets, while Cameron Grant (Lynchburg, VA/Heritage) and Matt Painter (Danville, VA/Dan River) each finished with two hits apiece. Sophomore Chris Colquhoun (Virginia Beach, VA/Salem) was one-for-four with a triple for the Hornets.
Lynchburg returns to the diamond tomorrow evening, as it will host the Quakers of Guilford College at Lynchburg City Stadium at 6 p.m. in league play.
