Stevenson Holds On to Defeat LC Men's Lacrosse 12-10

OWINGS MILL, MD - The third-ranked Stevenson University men's lacrosse team held on late to defeat the #16 Lynchburg College Hornets 12-10 Saturday afternoon from Owings Mill, MD, in non-conference action.

Stevenson started out the game strong, notching the first two scores of the game just 1:42 into the contest. The Mustangs went up 3-0 with six minutes left in the first quarter, but LC answered back with two goals to narrow the lead to 3-2 with 14 minutes to go in the half. SU proceeded to score four goals in a two-minute stretch and finished off the second quarter outscoring the Hornets 6-2 to go into the half with a 9-3 lead.

The second stanza proved to be a different story as Lynchburg ratcheted up the defense to get back into the game. LC opened the half scoring two straight goals, but SU scored two of their own to make it an 11-5 game. LC scored the next three goals to enter the fourth quarter down just 11-8. Stevenson found the back of the net 1:25 into the fourth, but the Hornets scored two straight goals to make the score just 12-10 with 4:48 left. However, Lynchburg could only fire off two more shots the rest of the contest as Stevenson hung on for the win.

While the Mustangs tallied nine goals on 33 shots in the first-half, the Hornet defense stepped it up to allow just 13 shots and three goals with nine saves after halftime. Freshman goalkeeper Franc Cook (Milton, DE/Cape Henlopen) had his best game in a Lynchburg uniform thus far, stopping 21 shots including six in the momentum changing third quarter. Senior attack Tyler Tolson (Lutherville, MD/Loyola Blakefield) scored four goals with one assist and freshman attack Dylan Hoff (Chester Springs, PA/Downington East) contributed with two scores and one helper. Senior attack Michael Mundorf (Cambridge, MD/Mt. Saint Joseph) found the back of the net once and dished out three assists, junior midfielder Aaron Khouri (Memphis, TN/Memphis University School) scored and assisted once, and freshman midfielder Ben Sauer (Richmond, VA/Collegiate School) contributed with two assists.

Steve Kazimer paced Stevenson (8-0) with two goals and three assists, and Jimmy Dailey and Greg Furshman each scored twice. Brett Yoder tacked on a score and two helpers, and Furshman and Joe Valderas combined to control the face-offs, going 16-for-24.

SU held significant advantages in shots (46-31), ground balls (37-27), face-offs (16-for-25), and turnovers (23-28). However, Lynchburg was 20-for-29 on clears compared to 17-for-26 for Stevenson, and LC also was 4-for-8 on extra man opportunities while Stevenson only converted on one of its eight opportunities.

Lynchburg (4-3) hosts Greensboro College on Wednesday in non-conference action with the first face-off slated for 7 p.m. on Shellenberger Field.
