LC Box Score vs. RMC (Game Two)
LYNCHBURG, VA - The Lynchburg College baseball team swept an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) doubleheader Saturday, knocking off the Yellow Jackets of Randolph-Macon College 7-0 in the first game, before turning around to win the nightcap 8-3.
LC (14-6/4-0 ODAC) won the first game thanks in part to the efforts of junior left hander Conner Thompson (Solomons, MD/Reservoirs). Thompson went the distance, allowing three hits and striking out eight. No runner reached third base, and he retired eight straight during the middle innings.
Offensively, two big hits proved to be the difference for the hosts. In a four-run first inning, junior Ryan Litz (Lynchburg, VA/Jefferson Forest) provided a big two-run, two out double. In the four inning sophomore outfielder Keegan Ashbee (Middletown, DE/Caravel) blasted a three-run homer to left field, his first of his career, to put LC up 7-0.
In the second game, the Yellow Jackets (6-11/1-4 ODAC) jumped out early, scoring two in the first inning on a passed ball and RBI single from Mike Wallace. Lynchburg starter Joe Devlin (Ashburn, VA/Broad Run) settled down after that, not allowing another run in seven innings of work.
The Hornets broke through on R-MC starter Byron Mendenhall in the fifth inning, scoring a single run on a RBI double from Ashbee. LC took the lead for good in the sixth, posting all five runs with two outs, highlighted by a two-run single by Jeff Taylor (Lynchburg, VA/Heritage).
R-MC cut the score to 6-3 in the top of the eighth, but two runs from LC in the bottom half of that inning put the game out of reach. Jordan Watkins (Freeland, MD/Hereford) paced the LC attack, going three-for-four, while Mark Carlson (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) was two-for-four with two runs and an RBI.
Taylor ended the second game with two hits, two RBI and two stolen bases, Matt Painter (Danville, VA/Dan River) was two-for-five, and Andre Carr (Chesterfield, VA/Manchester) was two-for-two with a run and RBI after entering the game in the sixth frame. Litz finished game two with two hits as well for Lynchburg.
Wallace finished game two with three hits for R-MC, while Jeff Beck and Jay Lichter each had two hits apiece for the Jackets.
Lynchburg is back in action on Tuesday afternoon, as the Monarchs of Methodist University come to Fox Field for non-conference play at 3 p.m.
