Reversed Call Gives LC Baseball a 3-2 Win Over Montclair State Friday

LC Box Score vs. Montclair State

Cameron Grant delivered the game-winning single Friday.                LYNCHBURG, VA - A ground out to shortstop and extra innings were reversed to a game-winning single by Cameron Grant (Lynchburg, VA/Heritage) in the bottom of the ninthm, as Lynchburg College knocked off Montclair State University 3-2 in non-conference baseball play from Fox Field Friday.

The final inning started with a Daniel Haugh (Earlysville, VA/Albemarle) strikeout, but he reached first base on a passed ball. After a sacrifice bunt from junior Matt Painter (Danville, VA/Dan River), a hit batsman and a strikeout, Grant came to bat.

Following a wild pitch to put runners on second and third, Grant punched a ball up the middle. Red Hawk shortstop Jay Bionde (Pompton Plains, NJ) made a diving stab, and tossed to first where first baseman Jason Lopez (West New York, NJ) lunged out for the throw. The base umpire called Grant out, but after counseling with the home plate umpire, it was determined Lopez's foot left first base prior to the ball being caught, giving LC (12-6) the win.

The game was dominated by starting pitching, as Hornet Jon Nichols (Stafford, VA/North Stafford) and MSU pitcher Nick Recchia (Randolph, NJ) both shined. Nichols went seven and third, surrendering one earned run and five hits, striking out four. Recchia was equally impressive, going eight innings allowing two earned runs on six hits.

Montclair State (3-7) got on the board first, scoring two runs in the second inning. Lopez led the frame off with a homer of the scoreboard in left-center, and an LC error led to the second score for the Red Hawks.

The Hornets responded with two in their half of the second, getting a sacrifice fly by Painter and a RBI double by Jordan Watkins (Freeland, MD/Hereford). Lynchburg was paced by Chris Colquhoun (Virginia Beach, VA/Salem), who was two-for-three with a double and one run scored on the game. Jeff Taylor (Lynchburg, VA/Heritage) was one-for-four with a run and two stolen bases.

Hornet relievers Rich Glover (Bedford, VA/Liberty), Justin Ferrell (Red Oak, VA/Randolph-Henry) and Ryan McDonough (Centereach, NY/Our Savior) combined to hold MSU without a run in the final one and two-thirds innings. Kevin Bond (Cedar Grove, NJ) led the Red Hawks, going two-for-four at the plate.

Lynchburg will host Randolph-Macon College Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. in a Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) doubleheader on Fox Field.
