Softball Sweeps Randolph 8-0, 8-0

LYNCHBURG, VA - The Lynchburg College softball team earned a sweep with cross-town rival Randolph College, winning both games 8-0.

LC only took five innings to secure the first victory, using two 4-run innings to take the 8-0 win. Brittany Allsop (Milford, CT/Johnathan Law) got the scoring going in the second inning off a single that drove in Kelly Self. Audra Della Rosa (Rumford, RI/St. Mary Academy Bay View) followed up with another single to plate Lauren Duguay (Williamsburg, VA/Jamestown). Tara Campbell (Leesburg, VA/Loudoun Co.) came up to bat and recorded another single to send Allsop and Sarah Smith (Danville, VA/Tunstall) to home plate.

The Hornets scored four more runs in the bottom of the fifth, with Katie Bruce (Lanexa, VA/Lafayette) singling in Leslie Bailey (Rockville, VA/Homeschool) for a score. Megan Fredenberg (Knoxville, TN/Bearden) hit a double to score Bruce, and Ashley Hohenberger (Wake Forest, NC/Longwood) hit a sacrifice fly to left field to plate Rachel Gallagher (Warrenton, VA/Fauquier). Then an error by the Lindasy Cross of Randolph allowed Fredenberg to cross home plate for an unearned eighth run. Bruce pitched five innings and allowed just five hits and one walk with four strikeouts to earn her eighth win of the season.

The Hornets struck early in the second game to earn an 8-0 win in six innings. Della Rosa doubled to left center and Gallagher homered to left field in the first inning then Duguay scored on a wild pitch in the second inning. Gallagher led off the third inning by getting on base due to an error from Nichole Smith and Bruce followed that up with a two-run shot to left field to push the lead to 5-0. Melissa O'Hara (Leesburg, VA/Loudoun County) doubled in the fifth inning to drive in Bruce, then Gallagher and O'Hara each got a hit to score two more runs in the sixth inning. Barbie Miles (Kinsale, VA/Washington & Lee) threw five innings and allowed just two hits while striking out six and Caitlin Dolby (Laurel, DE/Laurel) tossed one inning of scoreless relief.

The Hornets travel to Emory & Henry College on Saturday for a double header starting at 2 p.m. and hit the road to Eastern Mennonite University on Sunday for another double header at 2 p.m.
