Hornet Baseball Clips Tufts University 14-7 Friday Afternoon
LYNCHBURG, VA - The No. 14 Lynchburg College baseball team pounded out 23 hits as the Hornets knocked off the Jumbos of Tufts University 14-7 Friday afternoon in non-conference action from Fox Field.
Despite the mid-30 degree weather and constant rain, both teams' bats were hot all afternoon. The two teams combined for 40 hits, which is a season high for the Hornets. Lynchburg (11-6) scored single runs in the first and second innings, before plating two runs in the third frame and three in the fourth stanza.
The Hornets busted the game open in the bottom of the sixth, as they posted six runs on six hits in the frame. The inning was highlighted by a two-run single from sophomore third baseman Jordan Watkins (Freeland, MD/Hereford) and two RBI double by David Gaines, Jr. (Lynchburg, VA/Jefferson Forest).
Every Lynchburg starter had at least one hit on the day, as Gaines, Jr., Chris Colquhoun (Virginia Beach, VA/Salem) and Matt Painter (Danville, VA/Dan River) all collected four hits for the contest. Watkins finished three-for-four with two runs and two RBI.
Junior Cameron Grant (Lynchburg, VA/Heritage) was two-for-four with two RBI and two runs, while Jeff Taylor (Lynchburg, VA/Heritage) and Kyle Bradley (Brookneal, VA/William Campbell) both had a pair of hits for the hosts.
LC starter Jon Nichols (Stafford, VA/North Stafford) got the victory, going six innings while scattering 10 hits and allowing three earned runs. The Jumbos (0-1) were led by Ian Goldman (Lake Forest, IL) and his three-for-six effort, while teammate Caleb Sims (Burlington, MA) was two-for-three with two runs after entering in the fifth inning.
Nate Bankoff (Lynnfield, MA) was two-for-four, while Anthony Fucillo (Winthrop, MA), Eric Catalanotti (Grafton, MA) and David Leresche (St. Louis, MO) all finished with a pair of hits. TU starter Pat O'Donnell (Worcester, MA) got the loss, going five innings, giving up 13 hits and surrendering three earned runs.
Lynchburg is back in action Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. as it travels to Lexington, VA for a league doubleheader with the Generals of Washington & Lee University.
