Dr. Jack Toms, Ricky Flynn Take Home Top Regional Honors

NEW ORLEANS - The accolades for the No. 13 LC Indoor men's indoor track squad continued to roll in Thursday, as head mentor Dr. Jack Toms and distance runner Ricky Flynn (Gaithersburg, MD/Damascus) took home South/Southeast regional honors as released by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).
Dr. Toms was named the 2008-09 South/Southeast Regional Coach of the Year by the track governing body. Toms led Lynchburg to the ODAC Championship for the 12th year in a row, and his team scored 220.50 points in the win. Toms is the sprints and jumps coach for Lynchburg and has two athletes qualified for the national championships. He is in his 31st year with the Hornets.
Flynn won both the mile and 5,000 meters at the ODAC Championships for LC, as he was named South/Southeast Men's Indoor Athlete of the Year. His time in the 5,000 meters (14:32.58) is ranked fourth on the NCAA performance list. His best time this year in the mile was 4:14.25.
Toms and Flynn, along with Brandon Edwards (Warrenton, VA/Fauquier) and freshman James Bell (Huddleston, VA/Staunton River), will travel to Terre Haute, IN and Rose-Hulman Institute for Technology for the 2009 Indoor National Championships Friday and Saturday.
