Hornets Baseball Falls to Stevenson University 8-6 Tuesday
LYNCHBURG, VA - The Stevenson University baseball team pounded out 15 hits as the Mustangs defeated the No. 14 Lynchburg College baseball team 8-6 in non-conference play Tuesday afternoon from Fox Field.
The Mustangs (9-2) jumped out of the gates, scoring four runs in the first three innings off of LC starter Joe Devlin (Ashburn, VA/Broad Run). LC countered with single runs in the first and third innings to make the score 4-2. The Hornets took the lead in the bottom of the fourth, scoring three runs, highlighted by a RBI triple from junior catcher Ryan Litz (Forest, VA/Jefferson Forest).
The Mustangs responded in the fifth inning with three scores of their own, taking the lead for good at 7-5. The Hornets cut the lead to one in the bottom of the fifth, but could get no closer as the Mustangs plated an insurance run in the seventh. In the eighth inning for LC, an apparent game-tying single to left field was reeled in with a diving catch by SU left fielder George Papuchis.
The Hornets were paced offensively by Jeff Taylor (Lynchburg, VA/Heritage), who collected three hits in five at-bats, scoring three times. Litz was two-for-four with a run and RBI, while Chris Colquhoun (Virginia Beach, VA/Salem) and Daniel Haugh (Earlysville, VA/Albemarle) each posted two-for-five afternoons.
Lynchburg struggled to get runners around, as the Hornets left 13 men on-base for the game. LC was also 1-11 with runners on second and third, including going 0-3 with the bases loaded. SU was led by Griffin Stewart, who was four-for-five with three RBI on the day. Max Eckert blasted his fourth homer of the season along with going three-for-four, while teammate Ryan Baione also chalked up three hits while scoring four times.
Wade Keenan was also two-for-five on the day for Stevenson, while reliever Brian Spinazzola was tough out of the pen tossing four and a third of scoreless baseball.
Lynchburg continues its Spring Break home stand as the Nittany Lions of Penn State-Harrisburg come to town Wednesday for non-conference play at Fox Field at 3 p.m.
