Ramapo College Downs LC Baseball 8-5 Sunday Afternoon
LYNCHBURG, VA - Senior catcher Tim Gaven's late double plated three runs in the top of the 10th as the Roadrunners of Ramapo College knocked off the No. 14 Lynchburg College baseball team 8-5 in extra innings in non-league play from Fox Field Sunday.
Lynchburg (9-5) took an early advantage in the bottom of the second, as sophomore backstop Chris Colquhoun (Virginia Beach, VA/Salem) touched off for his fourth homer of the season. The Roadrunners posted three runs in the top of the fifth frame, chasing Hornet starter Jonathan Nichols (Stafford, VA/North Stafford) from the contest.
After LC tacked on another run, Ramapo (1-1) added a single score in both the sixth and seventh to push its lead back up to three at 5-2. LC would rally though, scoring three in the bottom of the seventh to knot the score at five. Lynchburg had two runners on in the bottom of the ninth, but could not get the game-winner in regulation.
In the first extra-inning, LC walked the bases loaded before Gaven stepped to the plate and scored all of them with a double deep into the right field corner, giving RC and 8-5 lead and eventually the win. LC was led offensively by Colquhoun, who finished two-for-three with six total bases, while Daniel Haugh (Earlysville, VA/Albemarle) had two hits and two driven in.
Junior outfielder David Gaines, Jr. (Lynchburg, VA/Jefferson Forest) was one-for-four, but extended his hit streak to 18 games dating back to last season. Nichols went four and two-thirds, allowing three runs on five hits, as the Hornets used 10 pitchers on the afternoon.
Ramapo was paced by Gaven, who finished three-for-four with four knocked in and a run scored. David Deredita was two-for five with two RBI, while Wil Jimenez was two-for-three with a run and RBI. Joey Cacchiola got the win for RC, as he tossed the final three and two-thirds, allowing one hit and one run, fanning three. Sophomore Justin Leon hit RC's first homer of the season in the sixth inning.
Lynchburg will continue its busy spring break on Tuesday as the Mustangs of Stevenson University come to Fox Field for a non-conference tussle at 3 p.m.
