LYNCHBURG, VA - The No. 14 Lynchburg College baseball team fought off a pesky Emory & Henry College squad as LC registered a twin bill sweep of the Wasps in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) openers for both teams from Fox Field Saturday.
LC (9-4/2-0 ODAC) posted two three-run innings in taking the first contest of the afternoon 6-2. Emory & Henry (2-6/0-2) opened the scoring with a single run in the top of the third on a Lee VanLear RBI single. The Hornets responded with a three-spot in the bottom of the third, with the big blow coming on a two-run single by Jeff Taylor (Lynchburg, VA/Heritage).
The Hornets put the game out of reach with three more in the bottom of the fifth, as junior Cameron Grant (Lynchburg, VA/Heritage) blasted a two-run homer to highlight the scoring. Bryan Breedlove (Suffolk, VA/Nansemond-Suffolk) went the distance for the Hornets, allowing one earned while striking out five. Junior David Gaines, Jr. (Lynchburg, VA/Jefferson Forest) was two-for-four, while Taylor and Matt Painter (Danville, VA/Dan River) each finished with a pair of base hits.
In the nightcap, LC pulled away with five runs in the seventh inning in cruising to an 11-4 win. The Hornets led 5-1 going into the top of the fifth, but three runs from the Wasps cut LC's advantage to one at 5-4. Lynchburg answered with six runs over the sixth and seventh, as Kyle Bradley (Brookneal, VA/William Campbell) and Chris Colquhoun (Virginia Beach, VA/Salem) both went deep.
All but one starter had a base hit for Lynchburg in game two, led by Gaines, Jr. and Andre Carr (Chesterfield, VA/Manchester) who both went two-for-three with two runs scored. Grant was two-for-four with two RBI in the second contest, while Colquhoun had three RBI and two runs scored.
Junior hurler Conner Thompson (Solomons, MD/Reservoirs) upped his record to 4-0 after going five and third innings, striking out 10 while allowing four earned. Ryan McDonough (Centereach, NY/Our Savior) was brilliant in relief, surrendering just one hit in two and two-thirds frames of work.
Emory & Henry was led offensively by Anthony Lowry, who posted multi-hit games in each contest. Garrett Price was three-for-four in game two, while VanLear and Marc Ailstock were two-for-three in the opener.
Lynchburg will continue its busy week with a single outing tomorrow afternoon against the Roadrunners of Ramapo College at 1 p.m. on Fox Field.
