Alumni Awards

The submission deadline for 2012 alumni awards has passed. Award recipients will be honored at Homecoming or Westover Alumni Society Weekend.

T. Gibson Hobbs Memorial Award

2009 Recipient: Mary Rose Carpenter Ragsdale '57, LC Trustee
2008 Recipients: Joanne Cheatham Burgess '61; Joy Fowler Flowers '57, '68 M.Ed.; Raymond Oliver '48; Neal Thompson '62

The T. Gibson Hobbs Memorial Award, named for the late Thomas Gibson Hobbs, a member of the College's first graduating class (1904), is the highest honor given to an alumnus or alumna of the College by the Alumni Association.

Eligibility requirements: A candidate must have attended Lynchburg College at least two years and have graduated from an accredited college or university. He or she must also have graduated at least ten years prior to the time the award is presented.

Criteria for selection: Each candidate must display an exemplary record of service in each of three areas: church (interpreted in as broad an ecumenical manner as deemed appropriate), community, and alma mater. Outstanding service in one or two of the three areas is not sufficient.

Past winners of the award include Delberta Bell Bennett '32, Allen B. Stanger '33, Maury Hundley Jr. '38, Lorraine Kiley Flint '43, John L. Suttenfield Jr. '49, Joe T. Lindsoe '52, and Judy Goding '69, '75 M.Ed.

Hobbs Award nominations can only be made by members of the Alumni Association. If you are interested in suggesting a nominee, please contact an Alumni Board member.

 

Distinguished Alumni Award

The Distinguished Alumni Award honors alumni who have distinguished themselves through outstanding contributions to one or more areas of society.

Eligibility requirements: A candidate must have earned a Lynchburg College degree or, in special cases, have attended the College at least two years and have been graduated from an accredited college or university.

Criteria for selection: Each candidate must have displayed outstanding contributions to one or more areas of society, including but not limited to: professional, academic, and personal achievements, as well as service to the College.

Past recipients include Harvey Ernest Jr. '71, W. Scott Mann '82, Joy Fowler Flowers '57, '68 M.Ed., Daniel D. Gilbert '59, Bernard D. Reams Jr. '65, William J. Bodine '78, '89 M.Ad., and Reese F. Cropper III '82.

 

M. Carey Brewer Alumni Award

2008 Recipient: Chris Whelan '00, '02 M.Ed.

The M. Carey Brewer Alumni Award, honoring Dr. Carey Brewer '49, seventh president of Lynchburg College, has been presented since 1983.

Eligibility requirements: A candidate must have earned a Lynchburg College undergraduate degree or, in special cases, have attended the College at least two years and have been graduated from an accredited college or university. The candidate must also have received an undergraduate degree within the last fifteen years and be younger than forty years of age.

Criteria for selection: Each recipient of the Carey Brewer Alumni Award must have made an outstanding contribution to one area of society. Contributions may include, but are not limited to: the areas of professional, civic, religious life, or service to alma mater.

Past recipients include R. Marc Jordan '69, Richard D. Jacques '71, Susan Boucher '87, '90 M.Ed., Myrna Foster-Kuehn '81, Vincent P. Burks '89, and Robert D. Eldridge '90.

The Honorary Alumni Award, presented since 1986, honors non-alumni of Lynchburg College for exceptional interest, dedication, and/or service to the College.

Eligibility requirements: A candidate can be, but is not limited to being, a staff member, faculty member, board member, or friend of the College.

Criteria for selection: Each candidate must have displayed exceptional interest, dedication, and/or service to Lynchburg College.

Past recipients include D. L. "Pete" Warren, William H. Shellenberger, Chuck Perkey, Ginnie Perkey, Barbara Owen, Elliot Schewel, A. Boyd Claytor III, and Leslie Louise Lytle May.

The Lynchburg College Sports Hall of Fame was established in 1978 to recognize and honor outstanding athletes and teams fo rtheir athletic performance, leadership, and team contributions while students at Lynchburg College. Since 1975, men's athletics and in 1981, women's athletics began competition in Division 3 of NCAA.

Annually, the Lynchburg College Alumni Association, through its Board of Directors, appoints a committee to review the nominations for the Sports Hall of Fame. Any alumnus/a, staff member or friend of the college may make nominations for this award. The guidelines and process for submitting nominations, selecting members, and induction ceremonies and awards are outlined at the Sports Hall of Fame Criteria page.
