Lynchburg College Nabs Two League Honors Monday

Ricky Flynn broke the school's mile record en route to another ODAC Runner of the Week award.            SALEM, VA – Two Hornet athletes were named Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Players of the Week Monday afternoon, as trackster Ricky Flynn (Gaithersburg, MD/Damascus) and softball pitcher Katie Bruce (Lanexa, VA/Lafayette) were honored.

Flynn continued his assault on the Lynchburg record books this weekend, as Flynn smashed another school record Saturday as the Hornet men's track squad competed at the VT Challenge, hosted by Virginia Tech.

Flynn, who broke the school's 5,000 meter time a weekend ago, this time took down the mile record as he ran a 4:14.25, which bested Gregg Cavaliere's time of 4:16.30, qualifying him for nationals. The award was Flynn’s second-consecutive and third weekly award of the year.

Katie Bruce pitched her way to her third career league weekly honor.            Bruce threw two complete games this week and recorded two wins. She allowed just eight hits in and two earned runs 14 innings while striking out 14 batters. She held opposing batters to a .163 batting average and tossed a one-hit shutout against Meredith College on Saturday.

The award was Bruce’s third in her career, and it marked the second year in a row that Bruce was honored during the season’s first week of action.
