The Second Annual Evening with Art and Friends

The second annual Evening with Art and Friends on Thursday, May 21, 2009, was a splendid event enjoyed by more than 140 Friends, with music by Oberon, featuring LC Professor Glenn Buck. Guest speaker, Dr. Mary Sweeney Ellett's (below), talk, "Good Wine, Good Food, Good Friends," was an insightful overview of Renoir's masterpiece, The Luncheon of the Boating Party (1880), in the Phillips Collection, Washington, D.C. was a great hit, and we've invited her back for a Select Sunday program. Glenn will be back, too.

The sumptuous dinner, prepared by LC's Chef Michial Neal, was sponsored by Bill and Ellen Jamerson; reception and program were underwritten by the Hon. Elliot and Rosel Schewel, Dr. Gary Wake, Alex and Jessica Newmark, the Hon. Paul and Sandra Whitehead, Skipper and Sandy Holt, Fred and Mary Esther Cawthorne, and Ann Gadong of The Art Box . A silent auction yielded $2,700 for a Pierre Daura watercolor still life, donated by Martha Daura from her private collection, going to Kathy and Richard Pumphrey, and a signed Queena Stovall print of End of the Line going to Mollie Mayhew. We were thrilled that Martha Daura and her husband Tom Mapp were able to join us. New and renewing memberships flooded in, raising a further $5,450. All proceeds will benefit Friends of the Daura Gallery and support exhibitions, programs, and special events. Thanks are extended to Event Committee members Rosel Schewel, Sandra Whitehead, Fred and Mary Esther Cawthorne, and Alex and Jessica Newmark; and a special salute to the Daura Gallery staff, Steve Riffee, Laurie Cassidy, and Danni Schreffler, who worked diligently on planning and implementation.

The First Annual Evening with Art and Friends

Our first Evening of Art and Friends, held Thursday, June 12, 2008, was hugely successful. Friends enjoyed a cocktail reception in the Daura Gallery and a dinner and lecture following in the Memorial Ballroom. The event received an unexpectedly large response and was attended by about 140 Friends of the Daura Gallery and their guests.

A highlight of the evening included the presentation, "Art, the Environment, and the

Little Ice Age," by Dr. Julius Sigler, vice president and dean of academic affairs, that was a perfect blend of art and science. The crowd also enjoyed the $5,000 winning silent-auction for the watercolor Still Life with Fruit Basket by Pierre Daura donated by Martha Daura from her private collection.

The dinner, underwritten by an anonymous donor, yielded seventy-six new and renewed Friends affiliates. Proceeds from the event totaled more than $11,000. All proceeds will benefit Friends of the Daura Gallery and support exhibitions, programs, and special events at the Gallery. Special thanks are extended to Event Committee members Martha Daura and Rosel Schewel, chairs; Frank and Jeanne Buhler; Fred and Mary Esther Cawthorne; Betty Harris; Terry Jamerson; Jessica and Alex Newmark; Dr. Gary Wake; and the Honorable Paul and Sandra Whitehead.
