Conner Thompson Tosses Gem in Hornet Baseball 3-1 Win Over Methodist Sunday
FAYETTEVILLE, NC - Hornet southpaw Conner Thompson (Solomons, MD/Reservoir) went eight and a third innings, allowing no earned runs on five hits and fanning five as the No. 14 Lynchburg College baseball team defeated Methodist University in non-conference play from Armstrong-Shelley Field.
Thompson was rarely in trouble, as the Monarchs (5-3) left only six men on base, two coming in the ninth inning after Thompson was removed. The game was plagued by errors, as the teams combined for seven miscues and only one earned run.
LC (7-3) opened the scoring in the top of the third inning, as David Gaines, Jr. (Lynchburg, VA/Jefferson Forest) reached on an error, plating Daniel Haugh (Earlysville, VA/Albemarle). The Hornets added another unearned run in the top of the seventh stanza, when senior Kyle Bradley (Brookneal, VA/William Campbell) came around after a dropped throw by a MU pitcher.
After the Monarchs made the score 2-1 in the bottom of the seventh, LC scored an insurance run in the top of the ninth on a RBI single from sophomore Chris Colquhoun (Virginia Beach, VA/Salem). In the bottom of the ninth, MU got runners on first and second, but freshman Robbie Garrett (Richmond, VA/Mills Godwin) entered to close the door for his first collegiate save.
Junior Jeff Taylor (Lynchburg, VA/Heritage) was two-for-five Sunday, while Haugh finished two-for-four with all three Hornet runs scored. Colquhoun and Gaines, Jr. each extended their hit streaks to 14 games, dating back to last season.
Methodist starter Michael Mahaffey went eight innings, allowing two unearned runs while striking out eight. Shawn Lovette was two-for-four on the afternoon, and right fielder Brad Davis was two-for-three with a run scored for the hosts.
The Hornets get the week off before opening league play Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. with a single game against Guilford College on Fox Field.
