Katie Bruce tossed a one-hitter Saturday afternoon.            LYNCHBURG, VA - The No. 8 Lynchburg College softball team opened its 2009 season with a doubleheader split with Meredith College Saturday, losing the opener 4-1 before taking the nightcap 6-0 in non-conference play.

In game one, offense came at a premium as both teams combined for seven hits. Lynchburg (1-1) took the game's first lead in the fourth inning, thanks to a solo blast by freshman Taylor Walker (Poquoson, VA/Puquoson). The Angels (3-3) trailed going into the seventh frame, but pushed across four runs, including a game-tying homer by Kate Moye.

In the final game of the afternoon, Lynchburg registered three innings with two runs each to give the Hornets a 6-0 victory. Sophomore Katie Bruce (Lanexa, VA/Lafayette) dazzled in the circle, shutting out the Angels while surrendering only one hit and striking out six. Bruce also delivered a two-run single in a two-run Hornet fourth inning.

Senior Brittany Allsop (Milford, CT/Johnathan Law) had a base hit and two runs scored in the second game, while Audra Della Rosa (Rumford, RI/St. Mary Academy Bay View) scored twice after drawing three free passes. Freshman backstop Holly Schonberger (Fairfax, VA/Oakton) was also one-for-three with two RBI for LC.

Jordan Smith pitched well for MC in game one, tossing a complete-game while allowing only one run on three hits, striking out eight Hornet hitters in the process.

Lynchburg will travel to Fredericksburg, VA tomorrow afternoon for a non-conference doubleheader with the Eagles of the University of Mary Washington, first pitch slated for 1:30 p.m.
