Lynchburg Men's Basketball Upsets Bridgewater College

LYNCHBURG, VA - The Lynchburg College men's basketball team celebrated Senior Day in fine fashion, upsetting visiting Bridgewater College 78-69 Saturday afternoon in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) action.

 Lynchburg took control of the game from the tip-off, taking the lead on a Sean Sutherland layup 15 seconds into the contest. The Hornets built an 11-point lead with 11:56 remaining in teh first-half. Bridgewater crawled back into the contest and took their final lead with 5:48 remaining in the stanza, but the Hornets answered back with a 16-5 run to go up 10 into intermission.

 The Hornets continued their strong play in the second-half leading and took a 14-point lead after Sean Sutherland (Alexandria, VA/Commonwealth) scored six of the first eight points. The Eagles stayed in the game and cut the margin to just 62-59 with 4:23 left in the contest. LC closed out strong, recording two field goals and 11 free throws to seal the victory.

 Sutherland scored a career-high 16 points in just 19 minutes, shooting 6-8 from the field and 4-6 from the foul line. Jack Burgess (Durham, NC/Cardinal Gibbons) contributed with 12 points, seven assists, four rebounds, and three steals. Mason Wooldridge (New Canton, Va/Fork Union) tacked on a double-double with 14 points and 10 boards while KC Mendez contributed (San Antonio, TX/Winston Churchill) with 11 points and four caroms.

 Dominic Trawick of Bridgewater (14-11/10-6) led all scorers with 27 points and and six rebounds, draining five of 11 three pointers. Jake Johnson came off the bench to provide 15 points, Kyle Hammond contributed 12 points and six rebounds, and Segar Jordan corralled 10 rebounds.

 The Hornets shot 48% from the field and 35% from three point range while the Eagles were 43%moverall and 33% from three. BC held a 38-32 advantage in rebounds, but LC won the game at the free throw line, converting 24 of 30 attempts compared to just 9-20 for Bridgewater.

Lynchburg (4-21/2-14) will travel on Tuesday to a to be determined location for the first-round of the ODAC Tournament at 7 p.m. The winner will advance to the quarterfinals of tournament this weekend.
