Hornet Baseball Drops First of Two Games in Fayetteville Friday

LC Box Score vs. HC
LC Box Score vs. FSU

FAYETTEVILLE, NC - The No. 14 Lynchburg College baseball team dropped its third contest of the season Friday afternoon, as the Hornets fell to Huntingdon College 5-4 in 10 innings. LC rebounded from the loss earlier in the day to defeat the Bobcats of Frostburg State University 7-3 in non-conference play from Methodist University Friday night.

The Hornets (4-3) led most of the contest, much in thanks to a brilliant pitching performance from starter Bryan Breedlove (Suffolk, VA/Nansemond Suffolk). Breedlove went seven innings, allowing no runs on only two hits, fanning eight hitters along the way while walking none.

Lynchburg earned the lead in the top of the second, as the Hornets scored a pair of runs. Jeff Taylor (Lynchburg, VA/Heritage) tripled to lead-off the stanza, before scoring the next play on an error. Junior Cameron Grant (Lynchburg, VA/Heritage) singled in the second run of the inning, plating Matt Painter (Danville, VA/Dan River).

After LC made the score 3-0 in the top of the eighth, the Hawks (4-2) notched their first run off of LC reliever Justin Ferrell (Red Oak, VA/Randolph Henry). HC tied the score in the bottom of the ninth with two runs, one of which was unearned.

In the top of the 10th inning, Lynchburg pushed across a run on a Taylor RBI single, but two unearned runs in the bottom of the frame gave the Hawks the victory. Lynchburg was paced offensively by Taylor, who finished three-for-five with two RBI and a run scored.

Grant and Chris Colquhoun (Virginia Beach, VA/Salem) each extended their hit streaks to seven, while second baseman Kyle Bradley (Brookneal, VA/William Campbell) scored twice for LC. Drew Harrell had two hits for Huntingdon, while Kyle Eller hit a homerun in the ninth for the Hawks.

LC rebounded from a loss earlier in the day to defeat the Bobcats of Frostburg State University 7-3 in non-conference play from Methodist University Friday night.

The Hornets (5-3) hopped out on top early on as they scored three runs in the bottom of the first frame. David Gaines, Jr. (Lynchburg, VA/Jefferson Forest) opened with a RBI groundout, followed by a two-run double later by Painter.

FSU (0-2) chipped away scoring single runs in the second and third innings, but LC responded with a single score of its own in the third and fourth stanzas to make the score 5-2 after four. The Bobcats pulled to within one on a fifth-inning homerun, but a pair of sixth inning scores put the game out of reach.

Taylor was four-for-four with two RBI and one run for LC. Outfielder Grant finished three-for-five with a pair of runs, while Colquhoun ended two-for-five with a run scored.

Jon Nichols (Stafford, VA/North Stafford) for the win, allowing two earned runs over five innings, scattering eight hits. Reliever Josh Youngman (Chesterfield, VA/Manchester) sparkled going three and a third scoreless innings, surrendering just two hits.

The Hornets battle Roanoke College in a non-conference tussle Saturday at 7 p.m. in Fayetteville, NC.
