Hornet Women Fall at Randolph College 64-54 Friday Night

Kristina Darby had a game-high 22 points Friday night.                LYNCHBURG, VA - The Randolph College women's basketball team overcame a 16-point first half deficit as the WildCats knocked off Lynchburg College 64-54 in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) action Friday night.

                LC (8-16/6-13 ODAC) surged out of the gates early on, as the Hornets led 24-8 after a Kristina Darby (Tampa, FL/Holy Names) jumper with 6:53 left in the opening stanza. The WildCats scratched back, finishing the first half on a 16-3 run to make the score 27-24 in favor of the visitors.

                After the intermission, RC (6-18/5-15 ODAC) regained the lead on a Kristen Blalock jumper with 17:43 left in regulation. Following five more lead changes in the frame, Randolph captured the lead for good thanks to a pair of Lindsay Cross free throws at the 4:16 mark.

                The win for Randolph was its first over Lynchburg since the 2005-06 season, marking a span of six contests. The Hornets were led by Darby, who finished with a season and game-high of 22 points on nine-of-14 shooting from the floor.

                Sophomore post player Kylie Lucas (Verona, VA/Fort Defiance) added 12 points for LC, who are currently tied with Emory & Henry College for the eighth and final spot in the conference tournament, which starts this Thursday in Salem, VA. Junior forward Tamara Snead (Richmond, VA/Henrico) paced the Hornets on the glass, grabbing a team-high nine rebounds.

                The host WildCats were paced by junior Katie Rechnitzer, who scored 19 points, while Lindsey Cross and Blalock each poured in 16 points for Randolph. Cross grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds, including seven on the offensive end.

                Lynchburg shot 20-63 (32 percent) on the evening, while committing 18 turnovers. Randolph hit on 21-54 (39 percent) from the floor, but benefited from 28 free throw attempts, as the foul total was 27-13 in favor of the hosting WildCats.

                The Hornets will end their 2008-09 regular season tomorrow with a home contest with Hollins University at 5:30 p.m. in Turner Gym.
