No. 14 Hornet Baseball Falls to CNU; Defeats Gwynedd-Mercy Saturday
NEWPORT NEWS, VA - Christopher Newport University pushed across an unearned run in the bottom of the 11th inning as the Captains knocked of 14th-ranked Lynchburg College 6-5 in extra innings in non-conference play Saturday morning. LC knocked off Gwynedd-Mercy 7-4 in nightcap to earn split.
LC (3-2) jumped on top early thanks to single runs in both the second and third innings. CNU responded in the bottom of the third inning, as the Captains scored three runs off of LC starter Conner Thompson (Solomons, MD/Reservoirs).
The Hornets tied the score in the top of the fifth on a Kyle Bradley (Brookneal, VA/William Campbell) sacrifice fly, but Trae Bailey homered in the bottom of the seventh to put CNU back up by a pair
Lynchburg forced extra innings thanks to a two-spot in the top-half of the eighth, highlighted by a Bradley homer, his first of the season and second of his career. In the deciding frame, the Captains got a lead off single, and after a sacrifice bunt, scored the winning run after a Hornet miscue in the field.
LC was paced by Bradley, who finished three-for-four with two runs and two RBI. Cameron Grant (Lynchburg, VA/Heritage) posted a three-for-five afternoon, while Jeff Taylor (Lynchburg, VA/Heritage), Daniel Haugh (Earlysville, VA/Albemarle) and Chris Colquhoun (Virginia Beach, VA/Salem) all posted multi-hit games for LC.
Bailey ended 2-4 with three driven in and two runs for CNU (2-0), while Parker Neal and Travis Medina each collected two base hits for the hosts.
In the second game of the day, the Hornets got a nice start from senior All-American Joe Devlin (Ashburn, VA/Broad Run) as they knocked off Gwynedd-Mercy College 7-4. Devlin went six strong innings, allowing just three earned runs.
Sophomore right hander Justin Ferrell (Red Oak, VA/Randolph Henry) sparkled in relief, giving up one unearned run in three innings of work, earning the his first save of the season.
Colquhoun led the Hornets offensively, connecting for his first homerun of his career, while Grant stayed hot with his second multi-hit performance of the afternoon.
Lynchburg host the University of Maine at Presque Isle Monday afternoon on Fox Field in 2009 home opener at 2 p.m.
