Generals Picked Atop ODAC Women's Lacrosse Poll
Roanoke, Virginia Wesleyan Round Out Top Three

SALEM, Va. --- Washington & Lee University picked up 78 total points, including seven first place votes, as the Generals came out on top of the 2009 ODAC Women's Lacrosse Coaches' Poll. Roanoke College received a pair of first place considerations and 71 overall poll points in the annual survey of the league's coaches. Virginia Wesleyan College rounded out the top three with 63 total tallies.
Washington & Lee (17-3, 8-0 ODAC) claimed an ODAC-best 10th conference title in 2008, its sixth straight dating back to 2003. The Generals return three All-ODAC first team selections in Britten Mathews, Kelsi Robinson and Colleen Evans. Robinson led W&L and finished second in the ODAC in assists with 29. Robinson also notched 54 points with 25 goals to her name while claiming 47 draw controls. Mathews finished last season with 57 total points on 36 goals and 21 assists. Evans sat atop the league in game-winning goals with four and also notched 16 caused turnovers. On a national level, Lacrosse Magazine ranked Washington & Lee 8th in this year's annual preseason NCAA Division III poll.
Roanoke (10-8, 6-2 ODAC) looks to make a run at its first title since the 1999 campaign after falling to Washington and Lee in the championship game last season. The Maroons return two All-ODAC first team selections in Gina Valles and Alida Haslett. Three second-teamers also return for Roanoke in Paige Mason, Carolyn Clark and Katlyn Scarlett. Valles, the league's top rookie last season, finished her inaugural season with 64 goals and 15 assists for the Maroons. She also led the ODAC in goals per game (3.56) and was second in points per game (4.39). Scarlett, a three-time All-ODAC selection, returns between the pipes for her senior campaign. Last season she tallied 175 saves and notched a 10.18 goals against average, which was good enough for a 39th in the nation. Haslett is back to lead the Maroon defense once again. Last season she scooped up 48 ground balls and caused 19 turnovers.
Virginia Wesleyan (12-6, 6-2 ODAC) fell to Roanoke during the semifinals of the 2008 championship, but the Marlins return four All-ODAC selections from last season, including first-team selection Laura Norris, second-team selections Suzi Mace and Aimee Sraver and honorable mention nominee Bethany Adomanis. Norris compiled a team best 63 points with 38 goals and 25 assists during her sophomore year while teammate Mace led the Marlin defensive squad last season with 38 ground balls and 16 caused turnovers.
