Hornet Baseballers Take Down Averett University 6-1

LC Box Score vs. Averett

DANVILLE, VA - Junior David Gaines, Jr. (Forest, VA/Jefferson Forest) continued his hot hitting Tuesday, as he went 2-4 with a homer and two RBI in a Lynchburg College 6-1 non-conference victory over the hosting Cougars of Averett University from Owen-Fulton Field.

Lynchburg (2-1) posted three-run innings in both the second and third stanzas to give the Hornets a 6-0 lead. In the second frame sophomore Andre Carr (Chesterfield, VA/Manchester) drove in two with a single, while the third inning was highlighted by a two-run Gaines homer, his first and the team's first of the season.

The Hornet pitching was stellar all day long as well, as starter Bryan Breedlove (Suffolk, VA/Nansemond-Suffolk) went four and two-thirds innings, allowing only one run on five hits. Junior reliever Conner Thompson (Solomons, MD/Resevior) shined, as he picked up his second win of the season thanks to three and a third near-flawless innings of work.

Averett (1-4) scored its only run in the bottom of the fifth inning on a RBI single by Jake Loye, but Thompson entered the game and closed the door on AU. LC out hit the Cougars 10 to six, and four errors and four unearned runs allowed by AU doomed the hosts.

Sophomore Chris Colquhoun (Virginia Beach, VA/Salem) chalked up his third consecutive multi-hit game to start the season, going 2-4 with two runs scored, while Matt Painter (Danville, VA/Dan River) had a pair of singles in three at-bats.

Averett University got two-hit games out of Jacob Waller and Adam Higgins, who both went 2-4 on the afternoon. John Walker threw three innings of scoreless relief, as fellow senior followed that by blanking LC for the final two frames.

Lynchburg will travel to Newport News, VA this Saturday afternoon for a pair of games on the campus of Christopher Newport University. LC will battle Gwynedd-Mercy College at 11 a.m. and the host Captains at 2:30 p.m.
