Hornet Women Pick up Tight 73-70 Win over W&L
LYNCHBURG, VA - Junior forward Tamara Snead (Richmond, VA/Henrico) netted four straight free throws in the closing seconds to turn a one-point deficit into a three-point advantage and the Lynchburg College women's basketball team held on for a 73-70 win over Washington & Lee University in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play Friday evening.
The score was tied at 40 at intermission, but the LC defense held the Generals scoreless over the next 8:30 to stake a 53-40 lead. W&L steadily chipped away at the advantage as the half progressed however, and took a one-point lead after a free throw from Meghan Ingram with 1:37 remaining. Snead took the contest into her own hands down the stretch, grabbing an offensive rebound with 1:12 on the clock and drawing the foul. She hit both free throws to give LC a 70-69 lead, and nailed both ends of a 1-and-1 after another offense carom to put Lynchburg up three with 39 ticks on the clock. W&Ls Rebecca Bolton drained one of two free throws with 19 seconds left, as did Hornet freshman Annie Terry (Appomattox, VA/Appomattox) two seconds later. A General potential tying three-pointer fell short and sophomore center Kylie Lucas (Verona, VA/Fort Defiance, VA) grabbed the rebound to seal the game.
Lucas finished the contest with a game-high 22 points and tied for a game-high with 12 rebounds. Kristina Darby (Tampa, FL/Holy Names) had 14 points and added six assists and three steals, and Snead finished with 12 points in just 15 minutes. Carly Greenlief (Centreville, VA/Westfield) and Courtney Brewer (Culpeper, VA/Highland) each posted eight points and six rebounds, and Terry had seven points, seven rebounds and five steals.
Meghan Ingram had a team-high 20 points for Washington & Lee (10-9/9-5 ODAC). Bolton added 17 points, 12 rebounds and five assists and Bethany Ridenhour had 15 points. LC held W&L to just 27 percent shooting (9-33) in the second half and 37 for the game (25-68). LC out-rebounded its guests 48-41.
Lynchburg (8-12/6-9 ODAC) is back in action Wednesday, traveling to Guilford College for another ODAC contest at 7 p.m.
