Challenge Course element, The Maze

What is the cost of the program; how do I pay; when is payment due; and what does it cover?
The cost is $280. You may pay by check, cash, or credit card. Payment is due with application. The program covers transportation, meals while on the program, and technical gear.

What equipment should I bring?
Link to the packing list page here. Please read it carefully and follow our advice. We are wise old sages when it comes to ABOVE equipment and the advice is tried and true (based on previous programs). Do not over pack, but definitely do not under pack.

Do I need to buy any expensive equipment?
Not unless you want to! Equipment such as backpacks, harnesses, or helmets will be provided by New Horizons along with all group camping and cooking gear.

What do I need to bring?
A specific list can be found linked here. You are only expected to bring personal gear such as hiking boots, clothing, head lamp w/spare batteries, eating utensils. Once you sign up you will receive detailed information about what you need to provide for yourself.

If I rented equipment, when and how do I get it?
We will be distributing rental equipment as we prepare for the trip on 8/18/09. You simply come to the New Horizons office #3 Hundley Hall and we will have the rental gear ready for you. If you did not rent equipment but would like to do so, please e-mail us newhorizons@lynchburg.edu (Gear is limited so please do not wait to reserve).

What if I have my own gear?
If you have your own hiking and camping equipment we encourage you to bring it on the trip. A limited supply of sleeping bags, day packs, and sleeping pads are available to borrow and may be requested upon registering for the trip. These are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis, reserve your equipment early.

How much do I pay for rental equipment?
Costs for rental equipment are included in the program price. (Gear is limited so please do not wait to reserve). Damage and loss are charged at full retail value.

Does the menu accommodate people with special dietary needs (vegan, vegetarian)?
Our menu is vegetarian-friendly. In fact, all of our meals are vegetarian. Vegans can adjust to our menu too, which consists of lots of rice, beans, pasta, oatmeal, pancakes, fruits and veggies. It is also important to note that we purchase as much local produce as possible; this is one sustainable practice. If you have concerns about your diet, please e-mail us newhorizons@lynchburg.edu

If I wear contact lenses, what should I do?
Most contact lens wearers are fine on our program, although some prefer to wear glasses for the five days. Whatever you decide, please bring a backup pair of glasses or an extra pair of contact lenses. Make sure to bring a headlight (for nighttime removal of lenses), and some people sing the praises of antibacterial hand gel as well.

Will I be able to move into my residence hall early?
All students accepted into the program may check in with the Office of Residence Life to take part in ABOVE. Students will pick up their keys and check in per Residence life schedule. Students will not be staying the first night and will leave for the program; however, belongings will be secured in their residence hall room. Students have the option of just bringing what they need and doing a complete move-in during Welcome Week.

Should I pack all my stuff for ABOVE move-in or should I send packages or have my parents bring everything afterwards separately?
As an ABOVE student you are moved directly into your fall housing. If you are driving to campus, pack all your stuff. If you are flying, you can ship your belongings (that you don’t need for your ABOVE trip) to your Campus mailbox. You should receive your mailing address/shipping information in other University mailings.

Which residence hall will I live in?
To be determined by the Residence Life Director.

In which orientation do I need to enroll?
ABOVE students must participate in one of the three June SOAR sessions. Please go to http://www.lynchburg.edu/gettingstarted.xml for more information.

Will I miss out on Welcome Week?
No. The ABOVE program will return to the Lynchburg College campus on Saturday (8/22/2009), at which time you can move back into the Residence Halls and join the rest of the freshman class for Welcome Week activities.

Do I need to have previous experience?
Our program is designed for anyone from the complete novice to the experienced veteran. Our program will cover the fundamentals of back country ethics and travel, as well as the dynamics of working with a new group of people. Therefore everyone, regardless of experience, stands to learn and grow throughout the activities.

How do I know if I'm physically capable of doing a trip?
The reality is that every trip will require some physical effort on your part. The best thing you can do if you are unsure of your ability to complete a program is to simply call us at New Horizons (434/544-8224) and we can help you figure it out. However, breaking in your new pair of boots and exercising in advance will add to your comfort throughout the trip.

How "out there" will we be during the trip?
The ABOVE program is designed to take you and the group away from the distractions of civilization and place you in the serene environment that is back country. Some trips, by nature of the route or activity, will intersect with busier areas. For the most part, however, you can expect to be out of contact and "out there" for the duration of your program.
