Study abroad at Lynchburg College has seen significant growth in recent years with nearly 30 percent of the 2009 graduating class having participated in a study abroad program over the course of their studies.
A study abroad experience looks very attractive to prospective employers and graduate schools because overseas study allows students to:
- encounter and interact with people of other cultures,
- challenge themselves and broaden their horizons,
- develop cross-culturing understanding,
- attain and/or enhance foreign language skills,
- gain a "global" perspective,
- and have a life-changing experience.
"Studying abroad in South Korea was one of the best experiences of my life. As a student of international relations with a specialty in the Koreas and Asia, it had long been a dream of mine to be able to see the country for myself. The time I spent here at Hannam, the lessons I learned, and the friends I made here will all stay with me for the rest of my life." ~Jill Murray '09
Jill (first on the left) returned to South Korea after graduation to teach English. In summer 2008 Jill, along with Dr. Richard Burke (center) and four other LC students, took part in Hannam University's Korean Studies Summer Program. Hannam is LC's sister-school in Daejeon, South Korea.
Students have a wide variety of study abroad options from which to choose including:
- College-sponsored faculty-led global studies seminars,
- exchange programs with sister-schools abroad in Austria, Canada, Japan, and South Korea,
- and semester-long experiences through study abroad service providers or other colleges and universities.
