Lynchburg College encourages all students to do an internship as part of their academic program; certain disciplines actually require internship experience for graduation. Approximately 44% of the 2008 graduating class had credit-bearing internship experiences as part of their undergraduate studies.

Internships afford students the opportunity to:

  • gain practical knowledge and skills related to their academic discipline,
  • obtain professional experience,
  • network with professionals in their area of interest,
  • clarify career goals and interests,
  • build their resumes,
  • and earn credit towards their major and/or graduation requirements.

Students may undertake an internship during the academic year or summer. Internships may take place in Lynchburg, a student's hometown, locations such as Washington, D.C. and the Walt Disney Resorts in Florida, and overseas locales. Recent Lynchburg College student internship experiences have included:

  • Josh Parman '09 (Communication Studies) - Northrup Grumman, Charlottesville, VA (see photo)
  • Elizabeth Jackson '09 (Biology) - Elephant keeper intern at the Maryland Zoo in Baltimore, Maryland
  • Kristina Darby '10 (Exercise Physiology) - Orthopedic surgery intern at the Florida Orthopedic Institute in Tampa, Florida
  • Ashley Payne '10 (English) - Lynchburg Obama Campaign
  • Rachel Safren '09 (International Relations) - FBB Federal Relations, Washington, DC, through the Washington Center Internship Program
  • Jessica Lloyd '09 (Communication Studies) - EuroNews, London, England, through the Washington Center Internship Program (see photo)

Internships at Lynchburg College are credit-bearing experiences. Students must be of junior status to receive credit for an internship, which also requires both faculty and on-site supervisors.
