Fall 2008: Amanda, Derrick and Jon

Derrick VanLeer '09 and Amanda D'Arcy '10 spent fall semester 2008 studying in Spain and Costa Rica. In addition, Jon Jerrild '10 took part in an exchange program with our sister school in Austria. Other LC students spent the semester in the Czech Republic, India, Italy, and Mexico. Two students took part in the Semester-at-Sea program.

Derrick's academic interests took him to Madrid, Spain, where he studied Spanish, lived with a host family, and worked on his Westover Honors and Spanish theses. His travels included visits to other Spanish cities, Rome, and Brussels. Now that Derrick has graduated, he will be teaching English conversation at a university in Chile.

Amanda expanded her knowledge of international relations and improved her Spanish in Costa Rica. Like Derrick, she lived with a host family. Exploring the Costa Rican rain forests and biodiversity broadened Amanda's understanding of her minor in environmental studies.  While abroad, Amanda volunteered at a water purification station in Nicaragua, where she returned in summer 2009 to continue her service. Amanda will also spend fall semester 2009 working as a study abroad student intern in the International Programs Office.

Jon's major in economics led him to Austria where he studied international business at our partner school--Fachhochschule Vorarlberg University of Applied Sciences. While abroad, Jon mastered the Austrian Alps and enjoyed his travels to Munich, Paris, and other cities in Austria.
