Hornet’s Top Men’s Indoor Track Preseason Poll

Hornet's Top Men's Indoor Track Preseason Poll
Bridgewater Chosen Close in Second
December 10, 2008

SALEM, Va. --- Lynchburg College received five first place nods and a total of 34 points to edge out Bridgewater College by three points in the 2008-09 ODAC Men's Indoor Track Preseason Poll.  The Eagles picked up the remaining first place vote and tallied 31 overall points in the annual coaches' survey.

The two squads found themselves in similar positions a season ago.  Lynchburg commanded the top spot with 34 points and five top votes.  Bridgewater had also collected the remaining first place selection, but received one fewer overall poll point with 30 markers.

The Hornets return to the track having won each of the past 11 conference indoor championships including a 32 point triumph last season.  Lynchburg returns several top finishers from last year's ODAC meet including long distance standout Ricky Flynn.  Also a national caliber athlete in cross country, Flynn won both the mile run (4:20.69) and the 5000-meter run (15:25.40) a year ago.  Chris Word returns following conference victories in the 200-meter (22.49) and the 400-meter dashes (49.41).  Stalwarts Brandon Edwards and Earl Graves look to add their own titles this season, as do a host of newcomers to the Hornets' squad.

Bridgewater College finished second in last year's championship meet for the second straight season.  The Eagles welcome back several standouts including senior throw Nathan Turner.  Turner won the shot put (16.26 meters) at last season's ODAC championship meet, placing second in the weight throw (16.27 meters).  Look for Tony Konate (jumps, sprints), D.J. Montague (jumps), Damien Ward (jumps, hurdles) and the distance tandem of seniors Nathan Rittenhouse and Brandon Spalding to make runs at titles in 2009.
