Hornet Women Outlast Emory and Henry 70-61 Friday Night
LYNCHBURG, VA - The Lynchburg College women's basketball team used a 10-0 run in the second half to recapture the lead for good as Lynchburg knocked off Emory & Henry College 70-61 in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) action from Turner Gym Friday night.
In the first stanza, the Wasps (1-4/0-2 ODAC) hopped out to an early lead, leading by as much as five. The Hornets responded with a 7-0 spurt over a two minute stretch towards the end of the half to take a 28-26 lead into the midway break. Junior Kristina Darby (Tampa, FL/Holy Names) scored nine points in the first half to lead LC (2-4/1-2 ODAC).
After intermission, E&H again fought back regaining the lead which grew to as much as six with 14:02 left in the game. That would be the point when LC put together its 10-0 run, and after an Alex Lyons' layup gave Emory & Henry a one point lead with 7:35 to go, a subsequent 6-0 run over the next 1:20 by LC put the game away.
Lynchburg was led by Dana Esposito (New Port Richey, FL/Holy Names), who finished with 13 points and six rebounds. Junior Brittany Dahn (Glen Allen, VA/Deep Run) had a nice night with 11 points, seven boards and three steals, and fellow post player Kylie Lucas (Verona, VA/Fort Defiance) chipped in 10 points, six rebounds and two blocks.
Lynchburg shot 36.2% from the floor on the night, and 79% (26-33) from the charity stripe. Freshman Carly Greenlief (Centreville, VA/Westfield) had a team-high nine boards for LC.
E&H was paced by Lyons and her 18 points and six caroms, also blocking four shots. Junior Sarah Petty stuffed the stat sheet with 17 points, eight rebounds, nine assists and three steals, and Baylie Snyder scored 14 points on 5-11 shooting from the field. The Wasps shot a 39% clip from the floor, nailing on 6-17 from downtown (35%).
The game was marred by turnovers, as the two teams combined for 48 on the contest, while Lynchburg's bench outscored E&H's reserves 23-2 on the game.
Lynchburg has a quick turnaround as the Quakers of Guilford College come to town tomorrow afternoon at 5:30 p.m. for more conference action from Turner Gym.
