LC Men Lose 58-57 Heartbreaker to Methodist

FAYETTEVILLE, VA - The Lynchburg College men's basketball team lost a 58-57 heartbreaker on the road at Methodist University Monday night.
 
The Hornets were down 53-45 with 4:56 left on the clock but went on a 12-4 run to tie the score at 57-57 with 26 seconds remaining. LC committed a foul with nine seconds remaining to send Leland Jones from MU to the line for two. Jones missed the first shot but converted on the second to take the lead. LC had the chance to win the game, but a timely steal by Mark Jernigan with one second remaining sealed the deal for Methodist.
 
LC (1-3) was led by junior forward/center Mason Wooldridge's (New Canton, VA/Fork Union) 18 points, five rebounds, and four steals in 28 minutes of action. Jeff Langrock (Southbury, CT/Pomperaug) posted 11 points, five boards, and two steals, Danny Reed (Adamstown, MD/Tuscarora) tallied nine points, and Steven Echols (Martinsville, VA/Carlisle) contributed with eight points, six rebounds, and five assists.
 
A.B. Lehman paced MU (2-4) with 14 points and three thefts while Jones and and Jernigan each tacked on 12 points and five caroms for the Monarchs. LC shot 38.2% for the game while Methodist scored at a 40% rate - just 29.2% in the first half but a blistering 52.4% in the second stanza. The Hornets finished the contest 4-12 from behind the three-point arc and Methodist made six of 21 tries. The charity stripe proved to be an instrumental element as Methodist converted 16 of 23 tries and LC scored on 11 of 17 attempts. LC controlled the paint, maintaining a 30-18 advantage in points in the paint, and also held a 21-18 edge in points off turnovers, and an 8-0 margin in second chance points, and a narrowly won the rebounding battle 34-32.
 
Lynchburg will travel to Harrisonburg, VA, Wednesday for an ODAC game with Eastern Mennonite University at 7 p.m.
