LC Women Fall Short Against Eastern Mennonite 71-68
LYNCHBURG, VA - Sophomore center Danielle Scott hit a fall away jumper with 1:06 on the clock to regain the lead for Eastern Mennonite University, and the Lady Royals held on as EMU knocked off the Lynchburg College women's basketball team 71-68 Tuesday in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) action from Turner Gym.
Eastern Mennonite (4-0/1-0) jumped out to an early advantage, building as much as a 13 point lead with 5:42 to go in the first stanza. Lynchburg (1-3/0-1 ODAC) powered back finishing the half on 15-4 run to cut the Lady Royal lead to 33-31 going into the break.
After intermission, the lead changed hands ten times in the second half with LC gaining its first lead since 2-0 at 34-33 thanks to a Kylie Lucas (Verona, VA/Fort Defiance) layup on the first possession of the second half. The Hornets extended their lead to five with 15:29 to go, but EMU fought back with a 10-2 run of its own to regain control.
Down the stretch, LC snatched back the lead with 1:40 to go on a Kristina Darby (Tampa, FL/Holy Names) three pointer. Following Scott's jumper to put EMU up, LC could not convert on its next time down and after two free throws by Brittany Snyder, two Hornet shots from distance to tie the score could not connect.
Darby paced Lynchburg with 13 points on 5-12 shooting, while Lucas ended 5-13 for 12 points. Sophomore guard Courtney Brewer (Culpeper, VA/Highland) filled up the stat sheet, scoring nine points to go with a team high seven rebounds and two steals, while Dana Esposito (New Port Richey, FL/Holy Names) had five points, four boards and seven helpers.
Kathleen Kitchen scored a game-high 16 points for EMU, and Ebony Dennis had the game's only double-double with 12 points and 12 boards. Snyder had 14 points for the Lady Royals, and Miranda Wolfe had 10 points and seven rebounds.
Lynchburg will travel to Ashland, VA Monday for an ODAC game with Randolph-Macon College at 7 p.m.
