CNU Rallies for 88-83 win over Lynchburg Women
LYNCHBURG, VA - Sophomore guard Chelsie Schweers scored 24 of her game-high 35 points in the second half to bring the Christopher Newport University women's basketball team back from a 20-point deficit for an 88-83 win at Lynchburg College Friday evening in non-conference play.
The Hornets led 50-34 at the half, and extended the advantage to 65-45 after a jumper from Dana Esposito (New Port Richie, FL/Holy Names) with 12 minutes remaining on the game clock. The Hornets still led by nine points with 5:33 left, but a 14-0 run by the Captains over the next three minutes, eight by Schweers, gave CNU the lead for good. LC closed to within two in the closing seconds, but Christopher Newport hit seven of its last eight free throws to seal the win.
Schweers nailed six of her 12 three pointers and hit 11-of-20 overall from the floor to go with eight rebounds, seven steals and three assists. Kimmy Hopkins added 16 points, while Jennifer Moore tallied 11 points and a game-high 11 caroms.
Junior forward Brittany Dahn (Richmond, VA/Deep Run) scored 26 points for LC (9-15 shooting) with seven rebounds and five steals. Kylie Lucas (Verona, VA/Fort Defiance) had 16 of her 18 points before intermission, and added seven rebounds and two blocked shots. Kristina Darby (Tampa, FL/Holy Names) had a nice all-around game with 15 points, seven assists, five rebounds and four steals. Esposito finished with nine points.
The rebound total was telling, as CNU held a 48-34 advantage on the glass, including 24 on the offensive end. Lynchburg shot 58 percent (19-33) from the field in the first half, but the Captains held LC to 39 percent shooting (9-23) in the second half. The Captains improved on their 34 percent first-half shooting to hit 51 percent of their tries in the second.
The Hornets (1-2) host Eastern Mennonite University Tuesday at 7 p.m., following the LC men's tilt against Randolph College at 5 p.m. in Turner Gymnasium.
