LC Women's Hoops Team Opens Season With 81-72 Setback to Alvernia

ASHLAND, VA - The Lynchburg College women's basketball team opened its season with an 81-72 setback against Alvernia College in day one action of the Randolph-Macon Tip-Off Classic.

Alvernia College led 31-20 with 6:58 remaining in the first half, but LC fought back and tied the game at 35-35 with 3:24 remaining behind a 15-4 run fueled by six Brittany Dahn (Richmond, VA/Deep Run) and five Carly Greenlief (Centreville, VA/Westfield) points. Alvernia would close out the half with a three point lead, 39-36.

LC would take a three point lead, 44-41, 3:07 into the second half and the game was tied at 54-54 with 11:36 remaining, but Kelli McIntyre nailed a three point jumper with 10:28 to go and Alvernia would hold onto the lead the rest of the game.

Junior Kristina Darby (Tampa, FL/Holy Names) led the Hornets with 17 points on 7-14 from the field and 3-4 from three point range along with six steals in 36 minutes. Dahn checked in with a balanced effort, tallying 14 points, eight rebounds, four assists, and three steals. Greenlief contributed with eight points, six boards, and four helpers. Freshman Katie Crump (Burke, VA/Lake Braddock) came off the bench to provide eight points on 4-7 shooting along with six caroms and sophomore Courtney Brewer (Culpeper, VA/Highland) tacked on 10 points.

Alexandra Velazquez came up big up for the Crusaders with 32 points, 12 rebounds, and five steals. Kelli McIntyre added 22 points, Joanna Graber had 11 points and four assists, and Allison Toczylowski added nine points and seven boards for Alvernia (1-0).

Lynchburg (0-1) plays Elizabethtown College at 1 p.m. tomorrow in the second day of the Randolph-Macon Tip-Off Tourney.
