LC Field Hockey Advances in NCAA Tourney with 4-0 win over Sewanee

Box Score

LYNCHBURG, VA - Four different players scored Wednesday as the Lynchburg College field hockey team defeated visiting Sewanee (The University of the South) 4-0 in the first round of the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament.

Freshman defender Kristina Morris (Stafford, VA/Mountain View) opened the scoring at the 18-minute mark on an assist from Jordan Warrington (Ocean View, DE/Indian River) to give LC a 1-0 edge. Less than a minute later, senior Carter Maxey (Midlothian, VA/James River) fired in a slap shot off a feed from a Caitlin Gibb (North East, MD/Rising Sun) penalty corner pass. The Tigers were whistled for a foul inside the circle at 31:16 of the first half, and Hornet junior Signey Milks (Gloucester, VA/Gloucester) put the resulting penalty stroke in the back of the cage.

LC added an insurance goal after taking a 3-0 lead into the halftime break, when junior Erin Funkhouser (Natural Bridge, VA/Menchville) corralled an Allie Weir (Richmond, VA/James River) rebound and scored.

The Hornets (18-5) outshot Sewanee 18-5 and held an 11-4 edge in penalty corners. Clarkie Crawford made five saves for the Tigers (14-7).

"I thought we played well in spurts . . . we capitalized when we got the ball in the circle," said Lynchburg College head coach Enza Steele. "We started slow, but our team knows when they're not playing well, and knows how to get themselves reorganized."

Coach Steele singled out Milks for her stellar play. "Signey played outstanding all game, she controlled the entire left side of the field."

The Hornets travel to Collegeville, PA this weekend as Ursinus College hosts second and third round play in LC's bracket. The Hornets square off with the host Bears at 11 a.m. on Saturday morning, with Salisbury playing Cortland State at 2 p.m. The two winners are scheduled to battle Sunday at 1 p.m., with a trip to the Final Four at stake.

"We'll need to be very tight on our circle defense, and take advantage of every single circle opportunity on our end," said Steele. "It will be a much faster paced game Saturday."
