About Us Academics Admissions Athletics Giving to the College Graduate Studies Library Student Life

In addition to the standard graduate studies admissions requirements , the Counselor Education faculty also requires a personal interview for all students seeking the M.Ed. degree. This interview provides students an opportunity to discuss their career choice and faculty with an opportunity to meet with candidates and to collect further information about their suitability for the profession. Additional perspectives on professional suitability are included under Student Policies and Evaluation .

During the academic year (i.e., fall-spring semesters), candidates should contact Dr. Mandy Perryman (perryman@lynchburg.edu), program director, to schedule an interview with Dr. Perryman or another member of the counselor education faculty. The interview should be scheduled at a time when the graduate application has been completed (that is, transcripts, recommendations, and test scores have been received). Students will provide a writing sample of less than one page during the interview on a preset topic, which is given at the time when the interview is initially arranged.

During the summer months, the Counselor Education faculty have established weekly sessions for interviewing prospective candidates as well as advising admitted students. The schedules are available under Summer Advising along with further information.

In addition, individuals who are interested in taking counseling courses (i.e., courses with the prefix of COUN) as non-degree students and who then plan to subsequently pursue admission as graduate students in the M.Ed. program, should plan to meet with Dr. Perryman or one of the counselor education faculty for an interview prior to non-degree admissions. In this case, this preliminary interview will enable faculty to discuss with students their interest in pursuing the field of counselor education in order to determine suitability for this profession.
