Lynchburg Ties Virginia Wesleyan 0-0 in ODAC Semifinals
VWC Advances to ODAC Championship 4-1 win of shootout
LYNCHBURG, VA - The Virginia Wesleyan College men's soccer team knocked off LC 4-1 in a shootout after 110 minutes of scoreless soccer as Lynchburg and VWC played to a 0-0 double overtime tie in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) semi-final action from Shellenberger Field Wednesday.
The first half was even as Lynchburg led the shot total 12-7, though the Marlins had the best scoring opportunities. Just 9:18 into the match, VWC's Brandon Massie had a breakaway but hit the post, and the rebound was quickly covered up. That chance was followed by a Josh Christian left footer that was stopped by a great diving save by Lynchburg's Matt Sturdivant (Bear, DE/Caravel).
During the second half, neither team could muster much. Lynchburg had its best scoring chance of the night at the 52:37 mark of the match, as Josh Reed (Newark, DE/Caravel) was fed a pass right in front of the net, but missed high.
In the shootout, VWC (10-6-2) made all four of its attempts, while Lynchburg only found the net once, dooming the home team and sending the Marlins into the ODAC Championship game Saturday.
The Hornets led the shot total 24-15, and were awarded six corner kicks to VWC's four. The contest was very physical, with LC getting whistled for 21 fouls and two yellow cards compared to the Marlins' 15 fouls and three cautions.
Lynchburg will now wait for a possible at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. LC sits with a 14-2-4 overall mark, finishing with a 7-0-3 ODAC mark. The Marlins play the winner of Roanoke College and Hampden-Sydney College Saturday.
