Lynchburg Teams Get Ready For ODAC Championship Runs

LYNCHBURG, VA - The fall season is coming to a close, as the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) championships start this weekend for numerous Lynchburg College teams. Lynchburg will host three home conference quarterfinal tournament matches this weekend on Shellenberger Field.

The Lynchburg field hockey team finished the regular season tied for first place, and will enter the ODAC Tournament as the No. 2 seed Saturday as it entertains Roanoke College at 1 p.m. The Hornets are led by junior attack Allie Weir (Richmond, VA/James River), who paces the nation with 31 goals and 65 points. Lynchburg has won 11 of its last 12 games going into the conference tournament. LC defeated the Maroons 6-0 last Saturday on Shellenberger Field.

The Lynchburg women's soccer team, which is ranked No. 3 nationally, will enter the ODAC Tournament as the second-seed, battling Randolph-Macon College Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m. LC knocked off the Yellow Jackets 6-0 Wednesday. The Hornets are paced by sophomore Betsy Kwiatkowski (Mount Jackson, VA/Stonewall Jackson) and Katie Santos (Cheltenham, MD/Bishop Ireton). Kwiatkowski has 15 goals and 16 assists, which is a new single-season record for helpers. Santos has 21 goals on the season, posting three hat tricks.

The men's soccer team looks to earn its second ODAC title in the past three years as tournament play starts Saturday against cross-town rival Randolph College at 7 p.m. The second-seeded Hornets knocked off the WildCats 2-0 last Tuesday at RC. Lynchburg is led offensively by juniors Josh Reed (Newark, DE/Caravel) and Pat Brown (Williamsburg, VA/Christchurch). Reed leads the squad with 11 goals and nine assists, while Brown has seven goals and is a constant threat on corners and long throw-ins. Keeper Matt Sturdivant (Bear, DE/Caravel) has been very sturdy in goal, allowing only four goals in ODAC play.

The men's and women's cross country teams will take part in the ODAC Championship run this weekend in Virginia Beach, VA, hosted by Virginia Wesleyan College. The men, ranked third in the region, are paced by Ricky Flynn (Gaithersburg, MD/Damascus) and Ryan Van Alstine (Midland Park, NJ/Midland Park), each of whom have broken the 27 minute mark this season on an 8K run.

The women, ranked fifth in the south region, harriers will lean on Jennie Pernisi (Camden, NY/APW) and Ashley Meyer (Springfield, MO/Glendale). Pernisi was fourth in the ODAC meet a year ago while Meyer finished eighth in the same meet.
