Box Score

LYNCHBURG, VA – The Lynchburg College men’s soccer team scored three times in the final 19 minutes to earn a 4-1 non-conference win over visiting Methodist University Wednesday afternoon.

Junior midfielder Josh Reed (Newark, DE/Caravel Academy) took a cross from Kyle Symczak (Woodbridge, VA/Woodbridge) and found the back of the net with just 46 seconds remaining in the first half top open the scoring.  Methodist’s James Gunderson lifted a 30-yarder into the top right corner of the net to tie the score at the 65:40 mark, but Stephen Legg (Newport News, VA/Denbigh Baptist) scored from Shawn Bender (Virginia Beach, VA/Bayside) six minutes later to again give LC the lead.  The Hornets netted two insurance goals in the final five minutes, as Michael Abbonizio (Maple Glen, VA/Hatboro-Horsham) scored from Matthew Dunnum (Fairfax, VA/Robinson) and Dunnum scored himself from Donald Hart III (Springfield, VA/Paul VI).

`           Lynchburg held a 22-16 edge in shots, but the Monarchs (7-8) had a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks.  Kyle Beach made seven stops for Methodist, while Matt Sturdivant (Bear, DE/Caravel) stopped six shots.

Lynchburg (10-2-2) hosts Virginia Wesleyan College Saturday at 7 p.m. in a match-up of the two top teams in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference standings.
