Funkhouser Nets Two as LC Defeats York 4-1

Box Score

LYNCHBURG, VA – Junior midfielder Erin Funkhouser (Natural Bridge, VA/Menchville) scored twice as the Lynchburg College field hockey team defeated visiting York College (PA) 4-1 in the first of three contests Saturday on Shellenberger Field for Homecoming Weekend 2008.

After a scoreless first half, Funkhouser assisted sophomore Caitlin Gibb (North East, MD/Rising Sun) less than a minute after intermission, then scored herself from Signey Milks (Gloucester, VA/Gloucester) at 39:45 to give LC a 2-0 edge. The Spartans trimmed the lead to one with an April McFarland tally, assisted by Casey Knauss. Allie Weir (Richmond, VA/James River) assisted Funkhouser 10 minutes later and Weir added an unassisted insurance goal with nine minutes left on the game clock.

Sarah Cates (Wilmington, DE/Brandywine) made five saves for the Hornets, while Claire Rekitzke was exceptional in the cage for York, stopping 17 shots. LC out-shot York 27-11 and held a 12-6 edge in penalty corners.

The Hornets (10-5) host Sewanee Thursday evening at 7 p.m. in another non-conference game.
