LC Field Hockey Rolls Past Bridgewater College 3-0

LC Box Score vs. Bridgewater

Erin Funkhouser scored her seventh goal of the year Friday night.                LYNCHBURG, VA – The Lynchburg College field hockey team jumped out to a quick lead Friday night and never looked back as the Hornets knocked off Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) foe Bridgewater College 3-0 in league play Friday night from Shellenberger Field.

Sophomore midfielder Jenny Weir (Richmond, VA/James River) opened the scoring 8:36 into the game, as she netted an unassisted goal to put LC up 1-0. Junior Erin Funkhouser (Natural Bridge, VA/Menchville) made the count 2-0 at 21:46 in the first half, as she scored on a penalty corner with help from Kristina Morris (Stafford, VA/Mountain View) and Caitlin Gibb (North East, MD/Rising Sun).

After the intermission, LC capped the scoring with an Allie Weir (Richmond, VA/James River) goal at 38:03, with Morris getting her second assist of the evening.  With her goal, Allie Weir extended her consecutive game with a goal to seven games, while Gibb now has a seven-game point streak.

Hornet keeper Sarah Cates (Wilmington, DE/Brandywine) made four saves, while teammate Tiffany Frye (Williamsburg, VA/Bruton) finished off the shutout, stopping one shot. Lynchburg outshot the Eagles (7-7/1-3 ODAC) 29-7 on the evening, also earning 12 penalty corners to BC’s five. Bridgewater goalie Elizabeth Sullivan stopped 13 shots for the visitors, collecting seven in the second half.

The Hornets have a quick turnaround as LC will tango with the Spartans of York (PA) College Saturday afternoon for non-conference play on Shellenberger Field at 1 p.m.
