Hornets Drop Double OT Heartbreaker to Christopher Newport Field Hockey 3-2

NEWPORT NEWS, VA – CNU’s Stephanie Bair converted a pass from Hailey Black off a penalty corner at 80:10 of the match as the Lady Captains defeated the Lynchburg College field hockey team 3-2 in double overtime in a non-conference match Wednesday afternoon.

The Hornets opened the tallying in the first half, as Allie Weir (Richmond, VA/James River) netted her 19th goal of the season with help from Caitlin Gibb (North East, MD/Rising Sun). CNU (9-3) knotted the score at one just before halftime on a Kim Tomlin goal.

After the break, the Lady Captain’s Ashley Cybulski put them out in front on a score from Black. Wier tied the score at the 57:26 mark of the contest, taking an Amanda Wain (Fairfax, VA/Oakton) feed and beating Christopher Newport keeper Emma Stout for the equalizer.

In the overtime period, both teams exchanged shots until with three seconds left in the first OT period LC was awarded a penalty stroke. Junior defender Erin Majerowicz’s (Pasadena, MD/Chesapeake) attempt went array though, forcing the second overtime period. The Hornets were outshot 16-8, also falling in the penalty corner category, 17-2.

Junior keeper Sarah Cates (Wilmington, DE/Brandywine) made eight saves in net for LC (8-5), while Stout finished with four stops for CNU. Today's loss marked LC's third overtime defeat of the season.

Lynchburg entertains Bridgewater College Friday night at 7 p.m. on Shellenberger Field.
