Hornet Men Blank Washington & Lee 3-0 Wednesday

LC Box Score vs. W&L

LEXINGTON, VA – The Lynchburg College men’s soccer team scored three times in the second half as the Hornets rolled to a 3-0 win at hosting Washington & Lee University Wednesday in a pivotal Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) game for each team.

Both teams are ranked regionally, as the Hornets (8-2-2/3-0-2 ODAC) are slotted at seventh and the Generals’ tenth. The first period statistics were slanted towards Lynchburg, as the Hornets outshot W&L 7-1 but could not beat General keeper Benjamin Bartlett.

After the intermission, Lynchburg snatched the lead at the 56:54 mark on a Pat Brown (Williamsburg, VA/Christchurch) goal with an assist from Josh Reed (Newark, DE/Caravel). Brown returned the favor 12 minutes later, this time feeding Michael Abbonizio (Maple Glen, PA/Hatboro-Horsham) to put Lynchburg up two.

The Hornets finished the scoring at the 82:02 point of the match, as Donald Hart III (Springfield, VA/Paul VI) netted a Shawn Bender (Virginia Beach, VA/Bayside) pass. Washington & Lee (6-3-1/2-3-1 ODAC) was forced to play the last 21:56 of the match a man down after Stiles Harper was sent off after being given two yellow cards.

Lynchburg finished with a 19-5 shot edge, also earning five corners to the Generals’ four. Lynchburg keeper Matt Sturdivant (Bear, DE/Caravel) earned his third consecutive shutout, stopping one W&L, while Bartlett finished with seven stops overall.

The Hornets will be back in action this Homecoming Saturday when they entertain Bridgewater College at 5 p.m. on Shellenberger Field.
