Winter Break 2009-2010

Rome: The Eternal City as Art and Museum (ART 110SA, ENGL 201SA or ART 166SA) Rome

Celebrate the New Year in Rome, the Eternal City. Students in the fine arts class will be on visual sensory overload as they experience firsthand some of the greatest art and architecture the world has ever produced. On this program, students explore how cemeteries, palaces, and churches, and in fact, how a city can become a museum. Meanwhile, literature students will visit sites and enjoy excursions related to the literary masterpieces from antiquity to the Renaissance. While in Rome photography students will also have the opportunity to capture the splendor of the Eternal City on film.

*Participation in this program will fulfill either the Fine Arts or Literature General Education requirement for students enrolled in these courses.

India: The Indian NGO Community and its Relief Efforts (INTL 377X) India

Experience the fascinating culture of India and participate in relief and recovery efforts through service learning. Students will work with NGOs in the tsunami-ravaged eastern coast in proximity to the bustling Indian city of Chennai. The program will also include visits to ruins, temples, state parks, and the world famous Taj Mahal.

The Bahamas: The Ecology of the West Indian System (BIO 314)Bahamas

Dive into the ecology of the West Indian Coral reef ecosystem. Students will learn to identify the reef species and will study the life history, ecology, and behavior of these organisms. The program will largely take place on San Salvador with some visits to nearby islands and reefs. (Requirement: BIOL 111 or ENVS 101)

Spring Break 2010

Rome and Avignon: The Schism in the Catholic Church (HIST 377)Rome A

This course will examine European history and the church's role in the European power struggles over the centuries, with the travel experience at spring break focusing on the Avignon papacy and the schism in the Catholic Church. Students will have the opportunity to visit the Palais des papes in Avignon and other points of interest in southern France as well as course-related sites in the historically rich city of Rome.

China: Rhapsody in Red - How Western Classical Music Became Chinese (MUSC 019SA)China

This program will integrate historical information and contemporary trends in Chinese Western Music practices. LC students will participate in the Internationals Schools of China 2010 Choral Festival held March 25-26, 2010 in Tianjin, China where they will hold master classes, perform concerts and recitals, assist in festival duties, and perform at the Festival Concert. There will also be visits to the Great Wall, Peking Opera, Confucius Temple, Buddhist Grand Mercy Monastery, Tiananmen Square, and the Forbidden City.

Australia: The Exciting Culture of Down Under (GS 377O and ENGL 377M or MST 377N)Australia

On this program, Australia's literature, museums, and historical sites will introduce students to the colorful culture of the land "down under." The vibrancy of cosmopolitan Melbourne and Sydney will allow students to experience Australia's past and present with tours of galleries and libraries as well as attendance of exciting sporting events. There will be additional stays in Canberra, the Australian capital, and Brisbane. Visits to national parks and Aboriginal cultural centers will further enhance the group's experience during their time in "Oz."

Austria: International Business in the Alpine Region

Travel to LC's sister-school in Dornbirn, Austria to gain first-hand experience in the Austrian business community. LC students will work collaboratively with Austrian students as they explore the business community in one of the most important economic regions of central Europe. Problem-solving is key as transnational teams confront the strategic issues inherent in globalization. The program will also include company visits in Switzerland, Austria, and Germany.

Costa Rica: The Ecology of the Rain Forest (ENVS 377N)Costa Rica

Students will study ecology and environmental science at a Instituto Monteverde field station in the Costa Rican rain forest. The Monteverde zone is a rural highland where the main industries of dairy farming, coffee production, and eco-tourism co-exist adjacent to pristine, primary cloud forest reserves. In the last two decades, it has experienced rapid growth due to eco-tourism. Monteverde is world-famous for its role in creating the Monteverde Reserve complex, a collection of private and public preserves protecting more than 100,000 acres of endangered tropical forest. While in Costa Rica, students will also visit the capital city of San Jose and coastal regions.

European Union Seminar: The Politics and Economics of the EU (ECON 377M and POLI 377M)

Examine the historical and contemporary context of European integration and the expansion of the European Union. The program will include site visits and lectures at European institutions in Brussels and Strasbourg, two cities known as the "Crossroads of Europe." Between Belgium and Strasbourg, students will visit battlefields from the wars of the 20th century. While in Austria, the group will spend time at LC's sister school, Fachhochschule Vorarlberg, and continue on to Vienna and Hungary. One of our final briefings will be a meeting with parliamentarians in the Hungarian legislature.

Quebec City: French Language and Culture à la Québecoise (FREN 377N)Quebec City

Enjoy a "European" experience in one of the oldest cities in North America while studying at LC's newest sister school. Laval University will host LC students for a language and cultural immersion program, which includes language instruction, a home-stay experience, and cultural activities. The beautiful city of Quebec and its environs on the St. Lawrence River will provide some great sight-seeing.

*Participation in this program will fulfill the Foreign Language General Education requirement.

St. Lucia: Island Exploration through Service-Learning (EDUC 377M, NURS 377M, INTL 377Y, COMM 377)St. Lucia

Make a difference and interact with the local culture by participating in an international service learning experience. Each activity is targeted to the student's major program. Students also have the opportunity to explore this tropical island as they work jointly with St. Lucians during the service learning activity. For example, nursing, education, and international relations students will work in tandem with Ministry of Education in schools and community centers while students in the communication studies course will produce documentaries with the Ministry of Tourism.

South Korea: An Intercultural Exploration of Korean CultureSouth Koreaat Hannam University

Students will experience a new culture and way of life during their visit to LC's sister university in Daejeon, South Korea. Classes focus on Korean language and culture while students explore Buddhist temples and taste Korean cuisine with their Korean "buddies." The program's "buddy system" pairs LC students with Hannam students who introduce their international friends to Korean life and culture; this really enhances the student experience, fostering cross-cultural understanding and friendship building. Activities include pottery-making, karaoke night, and a two-day excursion to Seoul, the South Korean capital. Students enroll in a three-credit course at Hannam University and receive transfer credit from LC.

Uganda: Community Health in the Global South (HP 377M)Uganda

Travel to the Gulu region of Uganda where you will work directly with local leaders and citizens to promote public health initiatives. Dr. Olsen and the Sports Outreach Institute (headquartered in Lynchburg) have extensive experience within the region. This hands-on experience will allow students to examine the importance of community health and well-being and its impact on development in countries of the Global South.

Uganda Program Itinerary

United Kingdom: British Memorializing Through Space and Time (COMM 377P)United Kingdom

Explore sites related to significant figures in British history and literature in London and Bath and examine how these places depict the people they memorialize. Students will visit sites such as Hampton Court, home of Henry VIII; Charles Dickens' House; the Jane Austen Centre; and the Tyburn Shrine. The program will also include an excursion to Paris where students will tour the Louvre and the Pasteur Museum.
