LC Men’s Soccer Upends EMU 2-1

HARRISONBURG, VA – Sophomore forward Michael Abbonizio (Maple Glen, PA/Hatboro-Horsham Senior) headed in the game winner with 21 minutes left in the game to give the Lynchburg College men’s soccer team a 2-1 win Wednesday evening at Eastern Mennonite University in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) match.

The contest was scoreless at halftime, but Cam Smith (Goode, VA/Jefferson Forest) scored at 45:46 on a double assist from Jared Melot (Reading, PA/Antietam) and Matthew Rowe (Manassas, VA/Osbourn). The Royals knotted the score at one all soon after, as Trip Henning scored from Mitchell Leap. Pat Brown (Williamsburg, VA/Christchurch) found Abbonizio at 69:09 for the game winner.

Junior Matt Sturdivant (Bear, DE/Caravel) made three saves to earn the win; Jackson Maust made 10 saves in nearly 78 minutes in the EMU net.

Lynchburg held an 18-15 shot advantage, but the Royals (7-2/1-2 ODAC) held an 8-6 edge in corner kicks.

The Hornets (7-2/2-0 ODAC) hosts Emory & Henry College Saturday at 4 p.m. in another ODAC match-up.
