No. 18 LC Field Hockey Falls to No. 10 Johns Hopkins University 2-1

OWINGS MILL, MD – The No. 18 Lynchburg College field hockey team dropped its third straight contest Saturday, as the Hornets fell 2-1 to the No.10 Blue Jays of Johns Hopkins University in a non-conference battle.

The first half was one-sided, with Hopkins holding an 11-1 shot advantage, also earning 10 penalty corners to LC’s none. Junior keeper Sarah Cates (Wilmington, DE/Brandywine) held her own for the Hornets, saving six shots in the opening stanza.

After the break, JHU (4-0) got on the board first with a Leah Horton unassisted tally at the 59:07 mark of the contest. The Blue Jays extended their lead to two on another unassisted goal, this time coming from Emily Miller with 7:21 remaining.

Lynchburg (2-3) cut the deficit in half with four minutes to go on an Allie Weir (Richmond, VA/James River) goal with help from Jenny Weir (Richmond, VA/James River) and Caitlin Gibb (Northeast, MD/Rising Sun). The Hornets earned a penalty corner at the end of regulation, but the efforts for a tying goal were spoiled by JHU.

The Blue Jays held decided advantages in both the shot (19-5) and penalty corner (20-2) categories. Cates finished the afternoon with a season-high nine saves, while Sophia Tieu stopped two LC shots for Johns Hopkins. This marks the first time since the 2005 season that Lynchburg has lost three consecutive games, as the Hornets dropped the first three games of that year. LC did rebound to make a NCAA Tournament appearance that campaign.

Lynchburg will try to return to its winning ways on Sunday afternoon, as Enza Steele’s bunch will take on Stevenson University at 2 p.m.
