No. 17 LC Field Hockey Falls To Franklin And Marshall 5-4 in Overtime

SALEM, VA - With a minute left in overtime, Jessica Mancino scored the game winning goal to propel the Diplomats of Franklin & Marshall College over the No. 17-ranked LC field hockey team in non-conference action Sunday.

Lynchburg (2-2) opened the scoring thanks to an Erin Funkhouser (Natural Bridge, VA/Menchville) unassisted tally at 29:30. F&M's Molly Rubin answered with a score of her own to send the game tied at one at intermission.

The Diplomats rushed out of the gates, scoring the first three goals of the second half to take a 4-1 lead. LC responded with three strikes of its own, finally knotting the score at four late on a penalty corner goal from Jenny Weir (Richmond, VA/James River). In overtime, two LC winners were knocked off the line by F&M defensive saves, which paved the way for Mancino's heroics.

Funkhouser finished with two goals on the afternoon, while Weir scored once and assisted on two others. Allie Weir (Richmond, VA/James River) scored as well, upping her goal-scoring streak to six games dating back to last year.

Rubin led Franklin & Marshall with a pair of scores, while Pamela Cassidy and Eileen O'Reilly also notched second-half goals. The Hornets outshot F&M 30-15 on the afternoon.

Lynchburg will now travel to Baltimore, MD next Saturday for a non-conference battle with Johns Hopkins University at 2:30 p.m.
